An interesting compendium of the original Land Rover
This review is for the book 'The Land Rover Story.' I bought this book for my Dad, a retired farmer, who owned every 'Series' of Land Rover, from the first Series-1, bought in 1952, to the 1983 long-wheelbase, coil-sprung, V8, cloth-top model, with sliding windows. My Dad read this book and enjoyed it. The fact that he did is remarkable; because, he can tell you what were the Achilles-heels of every model of Land Rover, including the persistent waiting-lists and labyrinthine systems for supplying these vehicles, which go some way to explaining the shoddy workmanship and poor quality parts and the curious availability of 'delivery-mileage' Land Rovers from non-dealership, off-road-vehicle specialists, at prices in excess of the 'manufacturer's list price', while there existed a two-year waiting list for customers buying from the 'main dealer.' Am unsure whether it is the vehicle itself, or the way he was treated by the motor dealers; but, my Dad has no affection for the Land Rover at all; with the possible exception of the 2-litre F-head Series 1, which he thinks came with an SU carburettor. The farmers liked that model. I well remember the models with the single-choke, downdraught, Solex, which performed it's job so poorly that it appeared to fulfill the secondary function of diluting the sump-oil with neat petrol: petrol that was so poorly atomised that it ran down the cylinder bores and into the sump.
