What is the lightest lure you can expect to throw on this?

I thru a 1/4 oz mini crank bait last weekend. SHOCKED! It cast quite far and zero backlash!! I am super pleased and qill replace my other 5 baitcaster reels with more of this same real.

Would this be a good reel for a person new to bait-casting?

You can fish like a pro all day long with the reel. This reel is excellent value for money, the glass fiber infused nylon frame not only makes it lightweight, but it also incredibly durable.

What length rod and what action works best with this reel?

I am using a 6 ft rod. In my experience either a 5'6", 6' or 6'6" would be a good starting rod length for this reel. I am still waiting for mine to be delivered and I would advise you to consider the type of fishing you would be doing to help in further defining your selection.
