Review: A really good little streamer with DAC functionality and a smashing user interface. - This product replaces a Teufel Raumfeld streamer which went west. My Audiolab CD player already has a superb ESS DAC and I can stream music us to it using a tablet computer via the USB interface or a TV using an optical cable. It sounds wonderful but the user interfaces on the Tablet and TV are not up to scratch when selecting music from my drives, internet radio and desertcart music. This is the main reason why I bought the Wiim. The user interface is first class and easy to use and learn. You can select music on your drives by, folder, album, artist, and song etc. and the Wiim automatically scans your music drives and sorts the music. Selecting desertcart Music, and Tidal etc. is push button and the most common internet radio stations are push button too. Everything is easy. My CD player has lots of connectivity having 2 optical inputs, 2 coaxial inputs and a USB input via a USB B cable. It also has RCA analogue output and Optical output. The Wiim only has single optical, wireless and ethernet inputs and single RCA analogue input . It has single optical and coax outputs and an RCA analogue output. The connectivity available will not hold most people back but there is no HDMI arc interface. I couldn't resist the temptation to compare the sound quality of the ESS Dac in the Audiolab player and the Wiim by using all of the connectivity available apart from the Ethernet which I don't need. The sound quality of the Wiim is only marginally inferior to the Audiolab, if at all. Maybe my belief that the ESS Dac is better is wishful thinking. I do not play so called "High Resolution" 24/192 music files etc. as I cannot hear the difference to CD quality files. Most people, if not everybody, cannot hear the difference when they are the subject of double blind tests. Most people's amplifiers, speakers and ears cannot handle the theoretical dynamic range and frequency response, there is no need to blast your ears with ultrasonic sound which could damage your hearing. The Burr Brown DAC in the Wiim pro is more than sufficient to reproduce excellent sound quality from CD resolution files. The Wiim pro can take line input from its RCA port, so you can connect a turntable; it converts the input from analogue to digital; the music can then be distributed to other Wiim devices in the house. It works well. However, the Wiim pro does not have a phono input with RIAA equalisation , like the Wiim ultra, so you need an analogue phono stage. The Wiim pro has an equaliser to adjust the bass, mid-range and treble frequencies. The device's functionality is marvellous and I like the fact that it can stream from a local drive: therefore, I can use the tablet to stream all of my stored music wirelessly without using the wired USB interface of the Audiolab. This is a phenomenal piece of equipment at a very reasonable price, and the sound quality is second to none. It has a plastic case but so what , as it is strong and well built. I recommend it highly. For 150 quid you can't go wrong. PS 24 October 2024, I forgot that the Wiim pro will connect via Bluetooth input, but the sound quality will not be as good as wireless or optical input, but Bluetooth will allow you to play music even if you don't have a wireless or ethernet server. Review: Incredible! - Finally since first signing up (pretty much when it first launched) I've found a device that plays nicely with desertcart music hd! I've tried android boxes, fire sticks, PC's all with DAC's without being satisfied that ultra hd tracks were actually playing in ultra hd! This device definitely is and it sounds incredible! On first opening and switching on for the first hour or so I was decidedly underwhelmed and considering sending back but suddenly it just seemed to open up and sound incredible and continues to do so. I've got it plugged into coaxial in on my Denon PMA-600 ne which is probably a basic amp in the world of hifi but has served me well since buying a couple of years ago and with this device now seems to have opened up and sounds better than ever. My speakers are Q acoustic 3030i which again to hifi buffs would probably be deemed pretty basic but let me tell you to me the whole system even though sounded good before now seems to have come alive with this little device. I've also got my Buzz xrs4900 android box plugged into the optical in on the Wiim which also sounds great and is really handy as I don't have to switch inputs on my amp I can just leave it on coaxial and switch from ethernet in for music to optical in for the buzz box using either the supplied remote or the Wiim app another handy feature being that as the Wiim is usb powered I use one of the spare ports on the buzz to power it. The Wiim app is also great really easy to use I can access all my Cd flac files that I've got saved to hard drives using the home music share over upnp, my preference for doing this is either from my PC or from Kodi on my android box. Whichever way you choose to do this though couldn't be easier with again the sound quality being fantastic. For desertcart music hd I mostly use the remote voice control rather than the phone app which is super easy and my favourite radio stations KEXP, BBC radio 2 can also be launched this way as you can configure them on the Alexa app using Alexa skills. Haven't used Chromecast yet as haven't needed to as you can cast directly from desertcart music app to the Wiim in ultra hd rather than using Chromecast (just look for the little WiFi signal when casting) rather than the Chromecast signal, but I'm sure it'll come in handy when needed. I've probably covered everything I can think of now apart from how they've done this at such little cost in comparison to other devices which cost a lot more and probably don't have so many options is amazing! If you're interested in an all in one option with incredible sound and lots of different options then buy it (trust me you won't be disappointed) Why desertcart themselves haven't come up with something such as this I've no idea?? Piece of cake to set up with the WiiM app, AirPlay works perfectly with all the Apple gubbins in my house, and TuneIn’s a great addition to the app. Fantastic sound with no distortion.
