A brand new stitch dictionary from the author of the wildly popular, AlterKnit Stitch Dictionary . KnitOvation includes more than 150 brand new colorwork motifs to expand knitters' creative possibilities and draw them further into the world of stranded knitting with clever, quirky, and beautiful motifs including botanicals, animals, and geometric patterns. The motifs are accompanied by a selection of accessory and garment designs to illustrate how the motifs can be used, and technical information on new topics including using charts and adding flourishes with duplicate stitch. More knitters than ever are enjoying colorwork, so now is a fantastic time to give them another tool for their knitting toolbox. Whether you’re looking for new colorwork motifs, knitting techniques, or pattern ideas, KnitOvation makes a great gift for experienced knitters or for beginners looking for inspiration. Review: A Creative Companion for Neurodivergent Makers - I absolutely love this book! It’s full of fun, adorable colorwork designs that you don’t often see in traditional knitting books. One of my favorite parts is how it shows how different fibers and colorway types look in colorwork—so helpful for planning projects! As someone with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and Irlen Syndrome, I truly appreciate how the writing in this book is clear, detailed, and easy to follow. The patterns are laid out in a way that supports my learning instead of overwhelming or confusing my brain—so instead of getting frustrated, I actually enjoy the process of creating. I especially love that each design includes a visual reference and videos on YouTube, which makes such a difference. These are something I often find missing in knitting, crochet, and sewing patterns; many designers unintentionally overlook accessibility for those of us with learning differences. But this book and designer really gets it right. The “design recipe” section is also amazing—it helps you build your own unique pieces, step by step. And the pattern templates at the back make it so easy to apply everything to whatever garment you’re working on. This book is a gem for both inspiration and accessibility! Review: AlterKnit Stitch and KnitOvation for the win! - If I had to choose only 2 knitting books to own, it would be AlterKnit Stitch Dictionary and KnitOvation Stitch Dictionary. Both books by Andrea Rangel contain cheeky, modern, and traditional motifs that can be incorporated into anything you can imagine. I can only hope to live a long life so that I can knit as much as possible while incorporating Andrea Rangel's creative motifs. Love, love LOVE these 2 books.

Variety of motifs, heavy on plants
Clearly written and contains a wide variety of motifs, from trains to toilets, mice to dinosaurs. Has both standalone motifs as well as continuous or "all over" type motifs, each with both a chart and photograph of test-knit swatch. Charts are designed for stitches that are the same height as width, so if your knit stitches (like most) are taller than they are wide, the resulting work may appear distorted. I love that there are indexes in the back to look up motifs that fit your project by number of stitches or rows in the repeat, but I was disappointed to find them not completely accurate. I ended up inspired to make my own spreadsheet of all motifs in my own library, including these. If you're looking for a colorwork motif dictionary, you might find it helpful to know the breakdown of these by category: Food - 7% Plants* - 38% Animals - 20% Geometric/Abstract - 21% Scenery/Seasonal/Recognizable inanimate objects - 20% (ish) * Many of the flowers or leaves are quite similar to each other. (3 versions of a maple leaF, for example), so counting them all as different patterns felt like a stretch in some cases. Average number of stitches in a repeat of a motif: just over 17, with a range of 5-48 stitches. Average number of rows in a motif: about 16.5, with a range of 5 to 46 rows. Pattern/design nstructions are clearly written, with good tips for modifying them.
