After an amazon.com search, I am reunited with PAGOO!!
After I ordered this book a year ago I have now re read it and found it to be an engrossing and intriguing experience! The whole book is about Pagoo or Pagurus the hermit crab. The writing and exquisite illustrations illustrate his life story beautiffully. From his starting out as small as a pencil dot to his full grown size of a couple of inches in length the delicate drawings take us through his world in Tide Pool town! Full colour pictures also depict baby shrimp, baby squid, baby crabs, and plankton creatures swimming around Pagoo in the great sea!As Pagoo molted he is shown in different stages of development, looking like a young crawfish in the early stage and later more like a hermit crab in search of a home(sea shell). Pagoo's travels took him through a mussel land and after meeting up with barnacles and a starfish he found room and board on the back of a lady hermit crab whose barnacles provided a home for Pagoo! After being swallowed by a fish and chased by a seagull Pagoo found a shell and had a narrow escape from a huge octopus! Finally Pagoo mated with a female hermit crab and afterwards she had many eggs to start the lifecycle again! PAGOO is a lovely, fasinating book! I'm glad I found it on amazon.com after I had lost it many years ago! Glad to get it in hardcover, complete with full colour slip cover! Highly recommended!!

fall in love with intertidal areas and so on
This is for an older reader in my opinion. I purchased it thinking my DS8 would read it, fall in love with intertidal areas and so on. I purchased the book, it arrived quickly and was in excellent condition. DS is an excellent reader and comprehends very well but this will not be for him. The language is flowery, filled with lots of imagery. Which is fine but it can be long in the tooth and hard to get through. I had to reread parts to get what was going on. I do plan to use excerpts from the book, especially the first couple of chapters when it talks about Pagoo's birth and zooplankton. I loved Holling's Paddle-to-the-Sea and so did DS. I hope Minn of the Mississippi is just as good.

Wonderful book about tide pool life of a hermit crab.
This a delightful book that entranced me as an 11 yr old, my children who are grown and now my 10 year old grand son. Tidepool life through a hermit crab. Opens the eyes of all of us of life below the waves. Wonderful!

Interesting & beautiful way to teach kids about tide pools & ecology
My dad is a retired teacher and loves Holling C.Hollings. I took my boys 5 & 8 out to the west coast and we spent days tide pooling and examining all the interesting creatures. We told my dad about it and he said we had to get this book. It's a little dense for a kids book but like all Holling books it has wonderful pictures and is very informative. Both of the boys loved it and recognized the details from what they had seen in the tide pools. The older one was studying food chains and ecology in 3rd grade this fall and the book fit in well with that as well.

Sweet story.
A family favorite! Even better when you get to visit crabs at the sea and find your own little Pagoo.

A beautiully illustrated & well-written book for younger readers.
This is a classic book for younger readers on the life cycle of the Hermit Crab. The illustrations are captivating, and in my case, led to a lifetime interest in Nature. The story is charming, and keeps the young reader interested.
