Yes, but much easier if backpack has the top handle loop

Can you hang this on the inside of the closet door?

I don’t believe it would work, there wouldn’t be any depth to it & handbags couldn’t hang freely. They would hang at a weird angle. A 10” handbag would be 2” from the door. Works great on a closet rod & holds many handbags in a small space. I piggy backed them, using two together. If you figured a way of reversing the hook it might work.

It is sturdy. No idea how much it can hold, but you can load it up with purses.
