For the latter cases, toilet paper is pretty much useless, so I decided to try these Nampons. WOW, one in and that's pretty much it. It will soak up blood and swell up, and usually the slight pressure and whatever coating on it is enough to stop the bleeding. The major plus side is the non-stick surface (I try not to think too hard about what it is), so when you pull the Nampon out, it *doesn't* leave residue behind or pull out the clog and restart the bleeding. These things are pricey, but if you've dealt with heavy bleeds, you will find that it's worth the money.
