I played alto sax for 23 years in an Air Force jazz band. Clarinet is my primary instrument. I actually put my horns down for 10 years but came back to it all 5 years ago. I am currrently 1st chair clarinet in an outstanding 90 piece concert band. However, it has just been 5 months ago when I also returned to jazz band. I have been experimenting with numerouos mouthpieces and reeds during that time but have been pretty frustrated trying to find the best set up. I bought a box of the Select Jazz 2 soft alto reeds and was blown away (pun intended) by this reed. I have been a big Legere supporter on clarinet for a number of years and tried one with alto but it just wan't there. This Jazz Select reed is amazing and I would higly reccommend it. I got lucky with a 2 soft and it was the right reed. You may have to experiment to find your perfect reed. Just an fyi, I settled on a Myers #5 metal mouthpiece and love it as well. These reeds are the best on the market. They remind me of the Rico Classics that were so good. Be sure and look at their reed strength comparison chart. I bought 2M for my choice, thinking it would be too weak. Played very well.

My teenager prefers these to other known brands and the sound quality is much improved without as much chipping. He uses these both for jazz and concert music.

Wow.. I just graduated from a 2 med to a 2 hard and what a difference it has had in fixing a couple of problems I had been struggling with. I've been playing the sax for approx. 2.5 years and have been going through some growing pains that have been driving me crazy. 1. is, when I go from a B to a middle D, I will more times than none hit a high A. 2nd. When moving from note to note, I would occasionally get a squeak here and there. I just got done playing for 2 hours and no squeaks and hit the high A 1 time and that was my fault. I did try some Rico #2.5 a while back, and they were terrible. Update: The second day of practice using the 2H reed is WOW.. This reed is a game changer for me.

These were outstanding out of the box. Great quality. Advertised as 5 per box. But there were 10 when received. Wish reeds were cheaper. Like the good old days. But we could say that for just about everything. If you play sax, this is as close as you can get to maintenance free reeds.

I’ve tried three boxes of these reeds. All were terrible. Once in the while, I could get one to work if I put about 30 or 40 minutes into using reed tools. Basically pretty awful. I played La Voz for almost 50 years. These are mostly unplayable.

I like this make of reeds, as they seem to be fairly consistent in the way they play. I think I prefer the non-filed version of these reeds. They seem to have more body to the sound. Both versions play well.

Testbericht von einer studierten Saxophonistin: die 3H Blätter in filed sind im Kern, wie der Hinweis H schon vermuten lässt, sehr stabil und bieten einen für mich passenden Widerstand beim Spielen. Die Beschaffenheit der unteren Seite ist sehr ebenmäßig und sehr gut ausgearbeitet. Bisher sind mir keine Blätter mit einer extrem unruhigen Maserung aufgefallen, was bei mir häufig darauf deuten lässt, dass die Blätter nur nach langer Einspiel- bzw. Bearbeitungszeit wirklich nutzbar wären. Die Klangqualität ist innerhalb der Auswahl von 10 Blättern in meiner Packung eher unterschiedlich gewesen, obschon man hier nicht vergessen sollte, dass es sich nun mal um ein Naturprodukt handelt. Insgesamt waren alle 10 Blätter gut spielbar; das kennt man von anderen Herstellern auch ganz anders. Während des Übens zeigten sich bei mir eher zwei Lager: die trotz der Stärke 3H eher soft, meist dunkel und rauchig klingenden Blätter (mag ich sehr gerne für Jazzballaden etc.) sowie die sonst klar, offen und direkt klingenden Blätter. Für funkige bzw. sehr rhythmische Stücke allerdings super passend! Auch wenn man eigentlich die Idee verfolgt, mit einem Blatt möglichst einen ganzen Konzertabend zu spielen, kann man hier durchaus - je nach vorliegendem Werk - auch einmal wechseln. Die soften Blätter haben trotzdem eine direkte Ansprache und lassen sich gut phrasieren. Zusätzliche Elemente wie Growling oder Bending funktionieren nach kurzer Eingewöhnung auf die Art der Blätter ziemlich gut. In der Tiefe nimmt das rauchige Element in meinem Klang zu; nach oben hin bleibt es soft und schön rund, welches ich selbst durch die Spielweise noch gut unterstützen kann und auch sehr gerne mag. Die offenen Varianten springen teilweise im Klang v.a. im ff etwas über; da muss man mit guter Stütze sowie Luft und Ansatz gegensteuern. Dafür hat man in der Tiefe eine direkte Ansprache und stabile Töne. Allerdings spiele ich auch ein eher klassisches Mundstück mit einer sehr geringen Öffnung. Mit einem weiteren Mundstück würden sich hier sicherlich andere Eigenschaften herausstellen. Auch wenn ich 90% meiner Spielzeit in der klassischen Welt verbringe, sind diese Blätter für Jazz oder auch Rock/Pop/Funk nach kurzer Anpassungszeit eine sehr schöne Alternative, auf die ich sicherlich in nächster Zeit immer wieder gerne zurückgreife! Die D‘Addario Select Jazz werden biologisch kontrolliert und ohne den Einsatz von Pestiziden angebaut, was mir persönlich sehr gut gefällt. Sie kommen zunächst in einer 10er-Pappverpackung, sind aber trotzdem noch einmal einzeln - diesmal allerdings in Plastik und zum Schutz vor Beschädigung dann in einer Pappe - verpackt. Im Vergleich zu anderen Herstellern wurde hier also durchaus schon an Plastik gespart. Das vorhandene Plastik dient meist der atmosphärischen Verpackung und soll die Blätter in einer konstanten Luftfeuchtigkeit halten, um die Eigenschaften möglichst lange beizubehalten. Da sie sich allerdings während des Gebrauchs sowieso der vorherrschenden Luftfeuchtigkeit anpassen müssen, finde ich dies persönlich eher unnötig.
