The most recent studies show that 40,000 cycles of IVF are carried out in the UK each year - and approximately a million are carried out worldwide. It is estimated that at least 200,000 IVF babies are born annually - and this figure is constantly rising. With assisted conception increasing year on year, THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO IVF offers an invaluable and insightful approach to the process. Packed with first-hand accounts of patients who have been through it, and Kate Brian's own experience of IVF, this book will de-mystify the treatment and give a 'behind-the-scenes' account of what really happens. Addressing the entire experience, right from the initial clinic visit through to the assisted conception cycle, THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO IVF provides an accessible, down-to-earth and reassuring account of using IVF to conceive. Review: Excellent read - Fantastic book, Ifound it in the library and had to buy my own copy. This is my first try at IVF and found it extremely helpful. Everything I was feeling when we were trying to get pregnant was said in this book. I had never voiced my feelings, it was good to know it wasn't just me who couldn't be around my friend's who had kids or felt upset when another one fell pregnant. I found the whole procedure and exactly what goes on in the laboratory very interesting. A must buy for anyone going through IVF for the first time. Review: good read - This book is written by someone who has suffered from unexplained infertility and ended up going down the IVF route. the book has several different chapters that each cover a variety of different points. I like the fact that the book has quotes from people that have been through IVF. you can tell that kate has done her research and mixes this with her personal experience. the book starts off with explaining in detail what IVF is and how couples have different feelings and the emotional impact when they find out that they will require assisted fertilisation. it also explains about how men react differently to women. The next section of the book gives you advise on finding the right clinic and explains all different types of treatment (I did not realise how many there were). the book also explains the tests and what they are for as well as going through the treatment. the book also explains the emotional impact of going through IVF, the disappointment of a failed attempt or the joyfulness of getting that big fat possitive. like other books that I have read it does touch a little of complimentary treatments. what I really liked in this book was at the end it had a brief history of IVF which I found interesting. I did find that some parts of the book were hard to read (although this could be down to my dyslexia) and it did take me a while to read. I would still recommend this book to anyone that is looking into assisted fertilisation.

I wished I'd read this before I first started fertility treatment
I came across this book some time around our third cycle and I wished I'd had it from the very beginning. Both in terms of the medical side of things but also the emotional such as who and how to tell people. There were moments when I read things and thought 'oh yes' or 'I'm not alone' which was great. But it's not hugely emotional, just a really good overview of all the things you will need to know from a medical and personal perspective. I have lent it to a friend at the moment but hope to get it back as we are about to embark on round 5 so I want to have another read!

Doesn't provide enough help.
This book is good if you are new to IVF, but there are two areas I believe this author could have expanded more on - the emotional and hormonal changes when you are injecting yourself and the kind of resentment you can feel towards your partner, AND realistically what long term health effects IVF and all the drugs can have on you...i.e. ovarian cancer.

I have to say it was a good read. You feel like each and every step ...
I purchased this after we learnt that IVF was our only Chance of a family. I have to say it was a good read. You feel like each and every step has been covered and explained and the whole process as you read becomes clearer and you find answers to questions you had. It's written well, it's Not too indepth or too medical! It's clear and understandable at a time When concentration is sometimes lacking! A definite purchase if you are faced with this daunting sad situation.

Brilliant
I am new to ivf and have been finding it hard to get my head around it all, this book is not only very informative it does it in a sensitive way and doesn't make everything seem medical. I finished this book in 3 days and for someone who doesn't read much that is a first! I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through ivf or will be in the future.

I feel like it's not as relatable as some of the other ...
This is a very in depth account of IVF. I feel like it's not as relatable as some of the other IVF books I have read, and it's really only geared towards the woman in my opinion. Although it does discuss male infertility, it doesn't seem to go as in depth as it does with female infertility. With other IVF books I've read, I've immediately wanted to give it to my husband to read, but I didn't feel that same need with this one. Although, I did read certain passages to him that might pertain to us when we do finally go through IVF. The best thing I can say about this book is that it is in depth. It does highlight some areas that you might not have thought about (like donor eggs, donor sperm, counselling, etc). If these are areas that you have to consider, I would definitely recommend this book for you. However if you are having straightforward IVF/ICSI, you can get the information you need in other books that are more relatable.

Essential reading for anyone not familiar with the process.
I bought this before we started our 1st round of IVF, it was very useful and explained a lot of what was going to happen. I felt like I didn't have to bug the nurses about trivial things but had a reasonable understanding which I could then expand on by asking questions at the clinic. I would recommend it to anyone about to embark on this journey.

Pretty good
This book is good at explaining the basics of IVF. It has a good section on picking a clinic but of course if you are looking at IVF you have probably already done this. It does do a nice job of explaining complex procedures in terms everyone can understand. I would buy this again.
