Beautiful
I own lots of high class pens including lots of lovely ones bought from Amazon, but if I had to choose one word to describe this one it would be 'Classy.' The pen just looks right in every way. It's the perfect size and feels just right whether posted or not, and the colour (the amber one) is wonderful. As for the nib, it not only looks great but it writes great as well - fine, but not too fine. The ink flow is just right as well. I buy lots of high end pens because it's my hobby - I like them - but if I wanted to create a good impression for some reason I wouldn't choose my Mont Blanc, I'd choose the Waterman Carene.

Beautiful pen. Not a daily driver
It is beautiful. Solid lacquer, nice gold trim, nib placement is unique for nowadays. Grease from hand is visible on it, so you end up wiping it a lot. Writing with it is a joy, smooth and wet. High capacity cartridges last surprisingly long. One criticism is that the cap collar can come off. When that happens you will feel pain, so I returned one and am babying it's replacement. Do not take to school and certainly never give to heathens with no understanding of fountain pens.

Fantastic quality pen
Fantastic quality pen, nice weight, nice balance, lays down ink very smoothly glides over paper, a real pleasure to write with, looks and feels superior to other makes of fountain pen, the fine nib lays a good line of ink more like a pure medium, the manufacturer has a excellent nib exchange service if a medium nib delivers a to broad a line, Along with a extremely reasonable price and excellent delivery sevice these are fantastic pens for a would-be fountain pen user who wishes to write letters as they should be written.

Beautiful
Excellent fountain pen. It looks superb, the Carene is my favourite of the modern Waterman lineup by far and this version is beautiful. It's a cartridge/converter and is supplied with a converter which works fine. The nib is great, I've had a couple of mediums before which have been very wet writers so I was happy to see this was available with a fine nib. I was lazy and didn't rinse it through before using it but it was fine - no hard starts or skipping and it has an average ink flow, will write with the lightest of pressure but won't put don't too much ink if you like to apply a bit more pressure when writing.

Lovely pen to use and to look at
I almost bought a Mont Blanc but I was lucky enough to borrow one of these from a friend and I fell in love with it very quickly. I do a lot of writing (designer and doctor) and while I am writing I often have someone (patient, client, colleague, bank manager) sat there and looking at what I am writing....and what I am writing with. I chose the fine nib - not scratchy at all, and perfect for writing in notes - and the Waterman tender purple ink Waterman Bottled Ink (50ml) - Tender Purple . Now I get lots of compliments on my choice of pen and ink and my handwriting has improved. I enjoy writing with it so much that I suspect my record keeping has improved too. Everyone's a winner.

Lovely pen, but buy elsewhere.
I read this is many other reviews but had to try for myself... The pen has been used before, and not even washed before resale.

Works perfectly but no better than cheaper models
After reading the glowing reviews for the Waterman Carene fountain pen I decided to purchase the Black Lacquer model with a fine nib. I am an existing owner of two other Waterman fountain pens - both work fine if maintained properly - both in the £50 price range. From the reviews of the Carene it seemed like several buyers had found the Medium nib too broad so I opted for the Fine nib instead. RRP was £190 and reduced to £95 on Amazon - OK I'll go with that I thought. The pen was ordered at the weekend and arrived the following Monday - good service. As far as the pen itself is concerned - well I took the advice offered in some other Amazon reviews - I flushed with tepid, previously boiled water then left the pen to air try for 24 hrs. Afterwards I filled using the piston filler provided. End result was that the pen worked perfectly. The line width seems about 10% thinner than my other older Waterman pens with medium nibs - so as far as line thickness is concerned I'm happy as a Medium nib would have been too thick. When filled with ink the pen is quite weighty and has a quality feel maybe missing from my cheaper Waterman pens. Is it worth the extra cost over a pen costing about £50? Well the pen itself has a nice quality feel about it and it writes really well - but not any better than any of my £50 pens I have to say. The feel of the nib on the paper and the ink flow are very much the same as my cheaper Watermans but the visual appeal of the pen and the feel in the hand is superior to my cheaper pens. As this pen is reduced from £190 to £95 on Amazon I am happy with my purchase. Had I paid the full RRP I would have felt a bit let down as it does not really do the job any better than a cheaper pen in the Waterman range in terms of the end result i.e. the marks made on paper - but there is definitely a worthwhile pleasure factor associated with using a quality writing instrument even if the end result is just the same as using something more modest in design and quality.

Fabulous
Beautiful pen. Writes very smoothly, even with a fine nib. Excellent ink flow. No blotching and doesn't dry up even if left without use for over 3 months. Comfortable to hold. A pleasure to use.

Stylish fountain pen.
Lovely pens. This is my second purchase as I gave my first to my son. These are classy, stealth wealth fountain pens.

Reliable, glassy, smooth daily writer
This is a very smooth fine nib that writes well out of the box. No hard starts no cartridge converter issues. No hard starts. No adjustments were needed. The deep burgundy brass lacquered finish is perfect. In hand, the pen feels slightly weightier than any Lamy Safari or TWSBI ECO pen I own. I first inked the pen with a Waterman Blue ink and made sure to saturate the feed properly. Read the instructions in the manual. I have used it over a period of two months and refilled the pen 4-5 times since. I deliberated between a medium and a fine nib for the Waterman Carène. Although generally I prefer medium nibs from LAMY or on gel or rollerball pens. The fine nib works well for me as a regular daily writer. I write mostly on modest fountain pen friendly notepad paper; from Rhodia, Fabriano, Campus Kokuyo to Maruman. The Japanese papers, Maruman or Kokuyo provide a smooth glide-like writing experience. 80gsm Rhodia, although popular with many fountain pen users; tends to feel a slight waxy on any fountain pen to my experience. The Carène puts lines on the page easily, with an easy, generous, smooth consistency. The internal ink feed for the Carène is a very long generous feed (You can’t disassemble it; but you can watch YouTube videos or pictures of people who have cracked the barrels open). In other words, when refilling the cartridges it’s good to prime the feed with ink since it will hold a little bit more ink for you between refills than what you see in the cartridge. I have not experienced any dry out issues even with the pen uncapped for an hour. A pen you can enjoy writing with at work, at home, or to sign that important document.

Beautiful!
What a beautiful FP. I never read too much about Waterman other than they are one of the older historic companies around. The remarks I do read make them sound like the Chevrolet of the pen world. I have several Watermans (Carene, Charleston, Expert, and Hemishere) and they are anything but a Chevrolet. Beautifully designed pens that are functional as well as eye catching. I have Pelikan, Sailor, Aurora, and Kaweco, but I keep reaching more and more for the Waterman for daily use. They are just marvelous pens!

Grail Fountain Pen
The smoothest writing fountain pen I have. I ordered the pen with a fine nib and it writes fine and the ink flow is perfect not too wet or too dry. The fountainpen glides over the paper like butter with Waterman ink on Clairefontaine paper. The section is very comfortable to hold. The pen is very stylish. The pen has exceeded my expectations and I would buy it again. I have 7 other quality fountain pens and none of them come close to the writing experience of the Waterman Carene. The pen comes even with a converter. I have registered with Waterman for an extra two years of warranty for a total of 5 years. One thing is that the uncapped pen has a tendency to roll easily so I have to be careful that it does not roll of the table.
