Dragonseye (Dragonriders of Pern)

Anne McCaffrey wrote wonderful books about her imaginary planet Pern. The dragons are beautiful, powerful, and kind. She set out to write books that made dragons heroic, and connected them as equal partners to humans. She succeeded, all while weaving them into detailed and thought-provoking novels. These are adult or young-adult books, NOT for children (many mature themes). I'm writing this review mainly to say - if you get totally hooked on this series (as I am), stick with the books written solely by Anne McCaffrey. There are books in the series written by (or with) her son Todd McCaffrey. They kind of ruin Anne's creation, in my opinion. They make much less sense, they don't give motivations for what characters do, and they focus on young characters (children or teenagers) but put them into very adult situations, which is just wrong. Stick with Anne McCaffrey's "pure" Pern books, and you're reading the best.

and finally, we learn about the second Threadfall, and how the starstones came into being. I would have liked more about the Starstones, yet there is SO much history that gets explained, that is a minor issue. We see the birth of the Harperhall and the Teaching Ballads! The weyrs face the first Thread after the first Interval, and while most of the population believes Thread is returning, there is one Lord Holder that does not. We see the beginning of Pern's justice system being given its first test, and are told some of the punishments meted out as sentences for various crimes. There is a lot going on in this book, the colonists are losing much of the tech that arrived with them, such as; the abacus and Stonehenge were both useful in lieu of the items that are no longer operational. Some day, I will read through the series in a chronological order...maybe. LOL Dragonseye is a great read. The characters are well done, some you will boo, others you will cheer, and as always, there are the dragons. The fire lizards do not make an appearance, although they are mentioned. ✌😸

This was a great book for fans who are looking to fill in the history of Pern. It makes the customs and conventions understandable and enriches the original trilogy which I read many years ago and often re read just to enjoy this totally wonderful world. McCaffrey is in fine form as she fleshes out the transition from an small colony with a history in the stars to a planet on it's own creating their own history, rules and traditions as they struggle to survive on a challenging planet with a unique social structure. Even without our old friends--F'lar, Lessa, Robinton , F'nor we are drawn in to the intimate lives of the people of Pern and learn how they and their time would come to be. If you have not read the trilogy, this book stands alone very well and make a nice entry to the series.

I think I read my first Pern story in 1975 - it was in a collection of different authors. it took me a while to find her books, but I believe I've read, and own, every single one. These include her non-Pern books and the ones by her son, Todd. Dragons-eye is a good finish to the initial Pern Trilogy without a sudden ending making you ache for more!! It wraps up nicely with just enough hints to other stories being spun that you do want to look for them, but It's not a burning, unfinished-business need! However, due to the sexual affiliations attributed to some of the characters, this really isn't a book for children - mid-to-late teen is the earliest age for reading them. It doesn't get graphic, just can be a bit intense.

This book in the PERN series details how important the Harpers of HarperHall are to the planet's survival. Without them the population of the planet would forget how important it is to keep supporting the voracious, long-lived dragons and their riders through the 200 years between threadfall. It also gives insights into how the dragons are raised and trained by their riders, from their escape from cracked shelled eggs to their place in society as full-grown protectors of the planet. The book shows how just one nonbeliever can create havoc and nearly bring down the planet's defenses when not held in check. McCaffrey, once again, accomplishes all this in a book that has the reader fully engrossed in what he/she can plainly see is a scientifically plausible future for residents of our planet earth should they ever venture out into the galaxy. Yes, newbies to McCaffrey's work will discover it is all plausible. As McCaffrey shows in her first book, DragonsDawn, the dragons are truly plausible in the way they were created by earth's scientists from a small lizard originally found on the planet. Again, GREAT BOOK, but should only be read in consecutive order behind the books before it in the series.

I read my first PERN book, "The White Dragon," when it came out as a stand alone hardback in 1978. Since then I have read every one in hardback, paperback (multiple times), and finely Kindle (also, multiple times). Anne McCaffery's character building from the very beginning was exceptional, and as her PERN Society grew, her technical knowledge grew even faster, yet, she made us feel like we were learning along & at the same pace as her PERN students. Now that she has left us for a better place, I truly, truly hope that her son & daughter publish the last book that Ms. McCaffrey was finishing up "after thread." We all need closure. (And, Todd, please, keep PERN alive for us. Thank You.) NOTE: All of my PERN reviews will be the same, because I love all of them. They are all a great read and a wonderful way to drop into another unique world when you want to escape this one.

It's almost impossible to tell Todd McCaffrey's writing from Marian McCaffrey's. The only difference between the two that I've been able to determine is that Mr. McCaffrey has a tendency to use an annoying amount of sentence fragments as well as an occasional use of colons where it would have been more appropriate to use semicolons.

Reading the Pern stories in the chronological order this time instead of the published order of my first time and finding it easier to keep track of the characters and plot line. Just as much fun the second time.

loved this series the first time i read it and am loving it just as much this time around including short stories i missed and stories that were not published yet.

One of the great writers of our time,brings her world of pern to life.

Like always Anne McCaffrey wrote an amazing novel who made us living among all her incredible characters! The story is set before the second Pass of the Thread, while the Weyrs and Holds work hard to get their home ready when the Thread will fall again. A wonderful novel full of adventures and romance. This book must be read after "Dragonsdawn" and before "Dragon's Kin" (one of the books Anne McCaffrey wrote with her son, Todd).

Beautify written , as usual, can't wait to start all over again by rereading them all. Thankyou
