Labour intensive but the results are worth it!
My wife found a teak outdoor table and chairs for ยฃ50 that had been neglected at the end of a garden for years. Everything was a mottled grey colour and covered in light green algae, and I was dreading the challenge of bringing it back to life. A pressure wash took care of the algae, but the wood itself was so dry it was a silvery light grey.Having read some reviews, I decided to try the Ronseal hardwood garden furniture oil. It isn't like teak oil (or any furniture oil I have used before, for that matter). It's more like a tinted resin that soaks into the wood before it hardens. I wore dishwashing gloves and used a small rag (a quarter of a microfibre cloth) to rub it into the wood, as per the instructions.Be forewarned that the application process is pretty slow going. You put a little oil on the rag, rub it in and repeat. On the first coat, I could only manage to cover a couple of square inches each time I loaded the rag, and with all those slats and angles, it took about 90 minutes to complete each chair. And it looked awful -- brownish, yes sort of, but with plenty of mottled light grey showing through. The second coat went on faster, maybe 45 minutes per chair and definitely improved the appearance. There were still some light areas, but the wood was starting to take on a deep chocolate brown colour that gave me enough hope to keep going. The third coat was a breeze, maybe 30 minutes per chair, and the final result was amazing -- deep warm browns that brought out the beauty of the wood and made the furniture look brand new.All in, I think I spent about 25 hours restoring this table and six chairs. And I did it all with 1 litre of Ronseal and about a quarter of a second litre. But it looks amazing. Bought new it would be ยฃ1200-1500, and I only have about ยฃ60 in it (plus the 25 hours), so no complaints here.I reckon a quick re-application of Ronseal in the Autumn and another in the Spring will keep it fresh and avoid the prospect of having to spend hours and hours in the garden trying to bring it back from the dead, so that's my plan going forward.

Mixed results. Best on weathered porous wood
As with many water based wood protection products the quality of the final result depends the degree of absorption into the wood. This in turn depends on the porosity of the wood & how oily it is including the residues of previous treatment products. I treated two garden tables which had been outside for a couple, of seasons. one of which had significant bare patches. I cleaned it up pretty thoroughly although I did not as recommended sand back to bare wood.I found there was almost no absorption into the wood so there was very little change in colour after three costs. Very disappointing.I then applied it to a well weatherd gardens seat by brush as it was too intricate to use a cloth. It produced a pleasing result turning the wood from grey to brown. Conclusion: avoid applying to smooth non-porous wood.

Good product. Saved buying a new set of furniture
Ideal for bringing back some very faded garden furniture to life. Was not sure whether a water based product would be good and durable enough. I gave it 3 coats in the end and it looks like new.

Very nice finish and easy to apply. Keeps it's colour and finish
Applied with a rag on 20 year old outdoor teak table after sanding it down to clean wood. As others have said, the first coat takes some time to apply as it soaks in quite quickly. Second and third coats much quicker. Delighted with the finish which feels much nicer that the teak oil which I have previously used. Time will tell how well it lasts and wil post an update in the spring. Suprisingly good coverage. I have about half a can left after doing the table (about 6ft by 3 ft) with three coats. Best technique for applying was to put some into a small plastic tub ( I collect small Xmas pudding containers for this sort of thing) and dip the rag into into it. Holding the rag over the opening and inverting takes far too long.Update May 2025: table and chairs have been outside all winter and spring and still exactly the same colour and finish as they were in Autumn. This is an exceptional product! Forget teak oil and exterior varnishes etc. This is a brilliant product!!!!

Lovely patina. Some colour, but not woodstain. Nourishment and protection for all wooden garden furniture.
Despite the mixed reviews on here, I found this product excellent. I used it on some new wooden garden furniture I bought earlier this year. The furniture had been treated at the factory, but it's never enough to last for that long, so I always give it another do. It went on beautifully and smoothly without running or drips (I used sponge brushes). But the real deal here was the way it treated some older steamer chairs that have been living outside for a year or so - they'd lost their gingery new-ness and were ageing into that silveryness, which I like, but they were dry and the old protection had worn off. This treatment gave them a lovely, cared for patina (the product has a little 'teak' colour to it), and gave the steamers a rich, teaky glow, even though they're only acacia wood, or something. Two hours to dry, like woodstain, but without that plasticiser feel you get with woodstain. This isn't protective woodstain.Four hours between coats. I did two coats. Then we had some really changeable weather - hot, during the day, cold at night. Then some torrential rain. Then three weeks of dry weather.Furniture still looks as lovely as if I'd done it that day. There's enough in this tin to do two coats to a table, four chairs and two steamers, with enough left over to give a coat to a Lutyens bench.Good value, and great protection.

Great Product!
We purchased the Natural Teak colour. The product is very easy to apply (started with a cloth then resorted to usung a brush and a cloth to wipe excess). Depending on the design and size of your furniture it can be time consuming. We had a large garden table with 2 single seaters and 2 double seater chairs. It took us roughly 3 days (3hour sessions) to get two coats on. You will have to get rid of any existing coating on your furniture as this product will not penetrate the wood and render it useless also the new colour will not show. In direct sunlight there is a light sheen but it is a beautiful dark colour otherwise. We had rain a few days and there was evident water beading. 2 1 litre tins of this product was adequate to get two coats on the seating and 3 coats on the table. Make sure you pour a little each time as the product can harden and gets harder to brush on.
