Great for Beginners, Novices and Children

As a Master Gardener with 40+ years experience with organic gardening and plant husbandry I was glad the book only cost $3.97.Parents may want to read this book and make notations in their Kindle regarding the spelling and grammar errors scattered throughout the book before handing it over to their children. Children struggle enough with composition, grammar and spelling to have it reinforced by the slipshod proof reading of a professional author. In this technological age many have became far too dependent upon "spell checker" to take care of the problem. If the problem is the wrong word being used, yet spelled correctly, spell checker is completely useless. Grammar checker would be handy too for some of those sentences which make little or no sense, but were spelled correctly. Not to mention those various missing words as well. The book is very thorough and has some great basic advice for urban gardeners and apartment dwellers. These are people who quite often have never planted anything. The author touches on the subject of container gardening but has no mentions of wicking methods for keeping the containers adequately watered at all times. This is most important in a container. Once the soil shrinks and pulls away from the sides of the container "re-swelling" the soil may involve the wasting of water to achieve results. There is a way to avoid this problem altogether. Wicking bed technology or methodology.Wicking is the most efficient method of watering for containers and the plants are never sitting in water to cause root rot issues. With wicking methodology the soil remains moist below, dry on the surface. Plants are never thirsty and weeds won't germinate in the dry soil at the surface. Outdoor containers do get rain and that is the time to be on the lookout for weed sprouts. If the rare weed does sprout up, it's easily spotted and removed before it gains a foothold. Worms will remain in this type of container during the growing season because conditions are always ideal. Just Google "Wicking Beds".Anyone with 30+ years of gardening experience won't find much information to help them here. The cover is a little misleading, I expected to find out more about aeroponics and vertical wall gardening methods but there is only a cursory mention in the latter part of the book. Novice gardeners will need some diagrams and photos; otherwise it's like trying to explain the color red to a person who was blind since birth. It's worth $3.97 in Kindle format but I wouldn't call it a "must have" book for my gardening library.

I Can Actually Visualize A Successful Patio Garden That I've Tried For A Long Time To Make Happen

*by E***! on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 27, 2013*

Urban Gardening lays out simply ways to manifest a patio, balcony, roof-top or backyard garden that will be successful without a lot of technical jargon. I feel like I'm armed with good information now to plan out the patio garden I've always wanted. My patio space is only 10' x 12' on which I need to share eating, cooking, an outdoor shower, and an easel/painting space. Shrubs and a wandering multiple-tendril tree-type plant outline two sides of the three sides available of the patio. I've come away with a few ideas on how I might be able to grow an edible garden dotted with a few flowering plants and my favorite herbs. So I don't go overboard, I'm only going to choose three of each: three vegetables, three plants and three herbs. I can see building a set of steps to arrange the pots on and placing them under the window box next to the shower to which the hose is also connected. I'm excited now to start planning my new patio space! I'm glad my friend, Janice, recommended getting this great guide. I think you will find this resource a very helpful tool to keep in your "potting shed" as well... ;)

Heavy potential but fails to deliver anything of substance.

*by G***S on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 26, 2013*

While I will not complain about the price of the book as I got it for free, this is not much of a book and would better be distributed as a PDF or pamphlet because of its lack of information. I commend the attempt to provide those without ANY background knowledge of gardening a starting point but I feel in the end it would do more harm than good as the reader may still feel confused about some points. The author has a job to deliver concise and accurate information if they are to be writing on the subject, whether they are an expert or not, and should refrain from vague details and letting the reader know to use Google.I do feel for anyone that purchased this book for more than .99 cents as that is what it is worth for the time put in. It is not completely worthless and had a few decent points on soil composition and introducing readers to compost, although once again these are remedial subjects. If a reader is buying a book of gardening, it is quite feasible they would have some background into it already. The writing style was easy to read but felt more like a sales pitch much of the time. Good attempt but nothing to write home about.
