I tried pushing them in with the heel of my hand to no avail, but I found the trick! Set the bottle on a folded towel on the counter, insert the cork as much as you can, then use a rubber mallet to pound it the rest of the way. It'll go in! Then remove it (easier than you'd think), and you'll find you can reinsert the cork without having to beat it into submission. :-) Also be sure not to fill past the shoulder of the bottle.
