Tilly has just moved to a new house, by the splash and curl of the sea. She loves doing cartwheels in the sand and playing catch with Mummy and Shadow the dog. But when it is time to start her new school, Shadow and Mummy must stay outside. And inside is full of strangers. ''Why don''t you try The Friendship Bench?'' says her teacher, when Tilly is playing alone. ''It helps children find new friends to play with.'' But when Tilly gets there, somebody is already on it . . . Review: Friendship and kindness comes to life - I recently read "The Friendship Bench" by Margriet Ruurs and it completely exceeded my expectations. This heartwarming children's book tells the story of a young girl named Tilly who moves to a new village and struggles to make friends. The story is beautifully written and provides valuable lessons about the importance of friendship and the power of kindness. The illustrations are also stunning and truly bring the story to life. It was also great to see a diverse cast of characters, it made the story more relatable to young readers and promote inclusivity. I would highly recommend this book to any parent or teacher looking for a charming and meaningful story to share with children. A gorgeous book about friendship, courage and creativity
This book is adorable! I used it in my classroom on transition day to introduce the idea of the Friendship Bench for children who feel lonely or sad. It is also really relevant to the school I work in as the local area is on the coast. The children discussed how the Friendship Bench worked in the story and how each child helped each other in their own way.

Used with entire primary school
We used this book as a whole school to remind children how to use our school playground friendship bench. Worked really well and all children could access the story.
