Does the flash have smart power management so I can keep the device plugged into a power source all the time?

I wouldn't keep it plugged in all the time, it does get warm while its plugged into the computer. As far as I know there is no smart power management with the Apricorn USB

Do I need to buy the power hub in order to program and activate the device?

You only need to purchase the hub if you plan of programming multiple secure keys. The secure key can be programmed into any secure PC.

Mandatory software, reliable hub with many ports

The configurator software is a must have if you're going to get more than a couple encrypted drives from Apricorn. Makes setup a breeze and has a good variety of options including reformatting and naming the volumes. Hub also works well and seems like a solid piece of hardware.
