Are there specific instructions for inserting the batteries?After 2 diff units; struggle to insert the batteries & it doesn't turn on.

No problems with the unit I received. Make sure the batteries alternate + and -. Looking at the unit with the battery cover removed and the trigger switch toward you the orientation is - + top + - bottom.

I don’t think that is supposed to happen. I have used mine several times and no smoke coming out of gun body.
