HP5 Plus Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 100' Roll)

I have been using HP5 for years. It pushes and pulls wonderfully (can shoot it over or under the ISO rating that Ilford recommends), it has an ample contrast range, I can change developing times and alter contrast (yes at a price of tonal range but that is the balance we look for). You can shoot this exactly as Ilford recommends and you will love it. But as you grow comfortable with it you have such a wide latitude with this film to alter it and make the final product your own. For example I shoot it at an Exposure Index of 200 (as compared to recommended ISO of 400). I the. Develop it close to the recommended 400 iso settings. This gives me a nice balance of contrast and tonal range. I do not scan my pictures. I take the negative into the darkroom and print them. The pictures you see and video attached are HP5 shot in this fashion. Look at that smooth grain, look at the tonal range and look at those deep, blacks and vibrant whites!

Kodak used to make great film. They still do, but it is over priced compared to the offerings of Ilford, which are all at least the Kodak version equivalent's, if not their superior. HP5 Likes to be stressed. Push it. Pull it. It shines. Box speed is a joke. Rate it at 200, develop it normally. Or shoot it at 128000 and develop in Dektol. Treat it like the filthy strumpet it is. Kiss it good night with careful development, and she will fulfill your deepest darkest dreams, accented with voluminous, infinitely varying shades of gray. Very much like Tri-X, but not nearly as susceptible to reticulation. If you don't know what that is, put the camera down, and just shoot some XP2 and send it out for development. Ilford rocks. Always has. Still does.

If your old enough to remember the Kodak Tri-X pan and Plus-X pan, you will love this film. Faster and finer grain than the stuff I was using back then. Great B&W film.

A bit more grainy and contrast than Ilford Delta 400 but in a good way, looks really good on film. I prefer this to Kodak Tri-X but they're very similar. You can push and pull the crap out of this film. It's nice to have a bulk roll so you can create your own roll sizes. Sometimes I just want to try something out or experiment so rolling a 10 or 24 roll is great.

Superb fast B&W film. Similar characteristics to Kodak Tri-X, but if you develop your own film at home, you will greatly appreciate how flat it dries. All the Kodak films I have used curl up along the length of the film (i.e., the sprocket holes get closer to each other), but so far all the Ilford's I have used dry nice and flat.

Consistency is the hallmark here .. from loading to developing the results are clear .. a great film to use as an alternative to the Kodak T-Max Film ..

It's HP5, what is there to say but the obvious: A lovely film, sharp, great tonality. For no good reason other than its iconicity I would have chose Tri-X in bulk, where it not that Kodak's absurd pricing policy makes 30m of bulk film c 45% more expensive than buying the equivalent number of 36exp rolls !! Fomapan 400 is c 1/2 the price, but doesn't quite catch the shadow detail.
