Yes you can open plastic and steel drums with needle nose pliers but for the cost get a bung wrench and you’ll never regret it

It will work fine to open all your new drums. Due to its construction materials, it may have troubles with corroded lids, in which case, steel would be my choice. It will work just fine for me...
