A striking, design-led reference book. A-Z Great Film Directors features Andy Tuohy's portraits of 52 directors significant for their contribution to cinema including kings of world cinema Wong Kar-Wai and Akira Kurosawa, arthouse pioneers Fritz Lang and David Lynch as well as the often under-appreciated female directors Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Campion. With text by film journalist Matt Glasby, each director's entry will also have a summary of the essential things you need to know about them, why they're important, a list of their must-see films, and a surprising fact or two about them, as well as images of their key films throughout. So whether you're already a film afficionado, or looking for a helpful cheat to pass convincingly as an arthouse fan, you'll love this guide to international directors, past and present. Review: Really informative, fab book - If you love your films and directors this is a really good book to have on your bookshelf. Nicely put together.
I've been a fan of Matt Glasby's film reviews (Total Film, etc) for some time - so was excited to hear he'd collaborated on a book. And what an interesting collaboration: Tuohy's distinctive illustration takes centre stage, with portraits of the directors paired with (assuming Glasby's) synopsis?. I've especially enjoyed Glasby's reviews of the films he didn't like (his often hilarious, frequently acerbic wit). Naturally there's a lot less of that in an A-Z of Greatest Directors, but his words are still a delight to read. Of course Hitchcock, Scorsese, and peers are represented, but also less (mainstream at least) lauded directors like Jane Campion and Truffaut. I like the size too.

A must for film lovers
Beautiful book that's a must for film lovers. The illustrations are gorgeous and the writing on them even more so. This is a meticulous, well-researched and loving piece of work.

Thoroughly enjoyable
A thoroughly enjoyable read which would make a good gift for a film-loving friend or relative. I cantered through it in a few sittings but tempted to re-read it one director a week for a year, watching the recommended films as I go (there are five per director). Not having checked the dimensions, book was slightly smaller than I expected (it's about A5 size) but it's a high-quality product. Recommended

Not even mention of the fathers of the trends in European cinematography
Mostly film directors from the English speaking world: No Tarkovsky, no Bunuel, no De Sica, Visconti, Fassbinder, Pasolini, Kusturica, Lars von Trier - there is no even mention of Dogma School, consequently there is no Suzanne Brier, Lukas Moodysson, Lasse Hallstrom. Some of those above mentioned are the fathers of the modern European film: Bunuel, Tarkovsky, Lars von Trier So not to mention of these three is a " film blasphemy" for me

Must for Cinephiles
Great book. I love the suggestions for other movies to watch by each director, because I was not always familiar with them all. A must for cinephiles.
