1st ‘real’ live review of the Cocoon Alarm (1 Stars overpriced webcam with a high gain microphone and poor app !!)
Firstly i'm dubious that none of the current reviews are ‘verified purchases’ and that they are all 5 stars…. Too perfect ?Full review below, here are the main summary points....Ok, so im getting that £300 paper weight again !Adding family members, easy enough, but how do I:- see all my family members- delete a family memberThe App (on iPhone 5SE, iOS 9.3.5)- I cant seem to find any settings ?- Easy enough to Arm, but strange the Green light on the Cocoon doesn’t change color?- I can watch live video easy enough- I got Activity notifications, although easily missed, not sure why I don’t get an email as well- When an activity is detected, no option to skip, only turn on Alarm or ‘tell cocoon its ok’- I can see my subsound® metric or something, but don’t understand its value or what im seeingThe hardware- The Alarm is an embarresment, far to quiet, almost pointless- The camera gives a good picture both in daylight and darkness- It can be positioned easily- Nice length USB cable- Very nicely designed multi-country charger, really nice- Seems to have a sensitive mic on a high gain settingUsage- Its premise seems to be that it will detect noise somewhere in the house/property- On hearing noise will let you know- On letting you know, chances are you wont have the camera in same room- All you can now do is turn on the ‘alarm’, perhaps the goal in turning on the alarm is to draw the intruder to go and find out what the noise is to reveal their face (not a bad idea, cocoon can have that for free !)- Burglar then unplugs device, turns off the power in the house ??Summary- It really is just a webcamera, with a high gain mic and some cloud storage- A weak app- Next to no security context with the deviceConclusion, for the same price by a proper security system, or if your into the tech home, but a system of wireless webcams, plenty out there with more features for much less !Full reviewVery excited, have been watching this one since I saw on indiegogo, but have been burnt too many times, buying from both kickstarter and indiegogo, so now wait and buy once the product is real !My initial worry I have to be honest, is its still £299……The box arrived as expected very quickly, Amazon’s fulfilment flawless as always !Its in a very small and compact box, which given the expected size of the product, about the size of a tennis ball !The box tells me a few things, interestingly, they are not offering the standard EU 2 year warranty ?! Also they don’t seem to want me to know the serial number of the unit, as its been covered over with a white lable, as has a few other bar codes covered up tooThe 1st page of the manual, says get the app, so ignoring the instruction, I went straight to the apple app store and searched for cocoon alarm, and the app appeared (no reviews yet !)The app was a very quick download, it requires iOS 8 or later (not mentioned on the box), so will catch out those using the old iPhone 4Plugging in….. I like that it is using a micro USB, as this will give more flexibility re power….. im concerned there doesn’t seem to be any backup batter in the product ! surely that would be the 1st thing a burglar would do (as in turn the power off !)We now have blue light…. Go go goThe app is ready to go, lets get startedThe 1st thing im asked is to share my phones location even when the cocoon app isn’t running ??? hmmmm, wait, there is a reason ‘so cocoon knows if your at home or not’, lets see how that works later… now it wants to have my motion and fitness data too ?? hmmmmAnd now for ‘setup’ purposes, it also wants access to my microphone on my iphone….. hmmmmAnd finally ? it wants to send me notifications, now that at least is quite normal ;-)Now its my name and email address, DoneNow its Wi-Fi setup, sensibly its trying to use the same wifi as my phone, but it does give me the option to use another, nice !Once, my details were entered in, the phone then sent by audio the initial setup…… very innovative, well done Cocoon ! (take note Amazon Echo) and would actually work for almost any product these days, as they so often have a mic these days !We have a flashing white light, then after a short while its now flashing red ? the manual only seems to refer to a yellow light, then a green light !? All my app is saying is Cocoon is working ??I think we will leave it for a while, to ‘ponder life’….. I mean turn green !Some 30 mins later…. Still showing read and cocoon isn’t saying anything (as in for my iphone to hear!)Ok, a further hour later and the Red light has gone out, so decided to do a power reboot….. now no lightsThe app seemed stuck at ‘Cocoon is working’, so killed that and started again, still says ‘Cocoon is working’…..Hmmmm im getting a £300 paperweight worry !So while im waiting for something to happen, lets look at some more aspects:- The product comes with a very nicely long microusb cable (with a right-angled micro connector), nice, because its easily replaced and also gives other ‘non-mains’ powering options- The manual is very light-weight, but I guess to the point if everything is working. I think they should include:o What the top button doeso What the difference color lights meano How to do a factory reset- Build quality is fine, although on mine the fabric covering the front has ripped in the corner (where there is a sharp point), so I guess Quality control isn’t quite there yetThe other thing to look at is price point- Either they have some exquisite technology built-inOR- They have factored in some hidden life-time subscription serviceOR- They know that the product will settle at the £149 price point and they want the early adopters to pay a heavy price(N.B I say £149, as I look at the entire competition, canary, ismartalarm, nest cam etc)Actually with all these new ‘security smart security products’, I think they are positioned and sold incorrectly, they are not security, they are ‘awareness’ product, a security product has a few key features:- Physical security- Detectable security- Resilience features e.g battery backup, connectivity backup- Recognised by insurance companies (I note that cocoon say that they are.... but no further details, a link would be nice?)Anyways, back to my Cocoon….. no lights…… just getting warm !Ok, so unit dead, app dead, factory reset not working….. returning to Amazon, think I’ll try a white one next !24 hours later…..So the White one has arrived, think I prefer it 100% more in blackBack to the app,Its asking me to setup a new cocoon…..Same steps againiPhone talking to Cocoonoh, now cocoon talking to iphone ! feeling left outwireless setup failed…… trying again…. Worked this timenow its success !Various orange and red light on cocoon, app back to saying cocoon is working (perhaps a poor choice of words ! as its stuck waiting for something)After about 5 mins, cocoon has gone green ;-) yippee !!So Cocoon is working, app is working…… lets see what happens now, the review starts here….Ok, so im getting that £300 paper weight again !Adding family members, easy enough, but how do I:- see all my family members- delete a family memberThe App (on iPhone 5SE, iOS 9.3.5)- I cant seem to find any settings ?- Easy enough to Arm, but strange the Green light on the Cocoon doesn’t change color?- I can watch live video easy enough- I got Activity notifications, although easily missed, not sure why I don’t get an email as well- When an activity is detected, no option to skip, only turn on Alarm or ‘tell cocoon its ok’- I can see my subsound® metric or something, but don’t understand its value or what im seeingThe hardware- The Alarm is an embarresment, far to quiet, almost pointless- The camera gives a good picture both in daylight and darkness- It can be positioned easily- Nice length USB cable- Very nicely designed multi-country charger, really nice- Seems to have a sensitive mic on a high gain settingUsage- Its premise seems to be that it will detect noise somewhere in the house/property- On hearing noise will let you know- On letting you know, chances are you wont have the camera in same room- All you can now do is turn on the ‘alarm’, perhaps the goal in turning on the alarm is to draw the intruder to go and find out what the noise is to reveal their face (not a bad idea, cocoon can have that for free !)- Burglar then unplugs device, turns off the power in the house ??Summary- It really is just a webcamera, with a high gain mic and some cloud storage- A weak app- Next to no security context with the deviceConclusion, for the same price by a proper security system, or if your into the tech home, but a system of wireless webcams, plenty out there with more features for much less !

Compared with a conventional alarm system this little hi-tech device is highly effective and unbelievable value for money
This great little device is a real game changer - it makes conventional alarm systems look like something from the middle ages. Easy to set up and once you get the hang of it, very easy to use. It's somehow very reassuring to know that if anything untoward is happening at home you will know about it and be able to deal with it within seconds. I have a 15 year old alarm system which still works, but now I don't bother with it any more and the money I'm saving on the service contract will pay for Cocoon in less than a year. If you don't have an alarm system and never thought you would be able to afford one, Cocoon is for you. It's more a wishlist than a criticism, but at this stage it lacks some more sophisticated features, e.g. being able to link to other security devices or distinguish between the main occupants of the house and occasional visitors such as cleaners, baby sitters etc. Cocoon have said they are working on these and a wider range of enhancements, so it can only get better.

Does what it claims.....
Have owned a Cocoon for a couple of months now. Did some research on alternative smart security systems before purchase but went for Cocoon mainly because of the claimed Sub-sound technology. There are a lot of webcams out there but none with this technology covering the whole house in the way Cocoon does. Smart security systems (like Canary or Nest) with only webcam / motion detector have limited use (or you would need more than one to cover the house). Think of Cocoon as a surveillance device that gives you an eye and ears on your home. Very different to the fixed wired security alarms most houses have at the moment. Before purchase I would definitely recommend anyone thoroughly read all of the content on the Cocoon website including the FAQs so you are fully aware of how the device is set up, how it works and its capabilities / limitations. In very simple terms once your smartphone and all other smartphones in your household are set up on Cocoon it arms and disarms itself when it detects you (or rather your smartphones) have all left the home – you need to enable location services for this to work and it logs your entry and exit times for a period of 7 days. It is more accurate if you keep your phone wi-fi enabled. You can manually change the location for greater accuracy via the app. Your "Location" is measured within a small radius of your home so it won't necessarily arm itself if you pop next door or a short distance down the road.Cocoon is well designed, feels solidly constructed and is easy to install – it needs mains power but the power cord provided is about 1.5m in length. Set up was easy – it did take a few attempts to get Cocoon to pair with my iPhone – the phone needs to be held very close to the Cocoon I found. Once paired the rest of the set up was quick and straightforward. When armed Cocoon learns over a couple of weeks about the sounds that occur in your home when you are not around – we have a cat and at first Cocoon was triggered by the noise of the cat flap and other sounds associated with her movements – it has now learnt these are OK so it no longer alerts us to cat noises which is clever and one of the reasons we chose Cocoon. It is very sensitive to noise as claimed – any unexpected sounds are picked up even through multiple walls / closed doors etc. It detected our front door being opened from the sound of the lock! It will also detect movement but that’s restricted to the area the Cocoon is situated – careful thought is needed as to where it’s located so you cover the most likely point of entry or a transit area likely to be used by an intruder. If it is triggered Cocoon sends an alert to all the smartphones and starts to record the video and sounds which can be accessed at a later time for up to 7 days. You have the option whether to trigger the siren or simply watch for any suspicious activity. Cocoon does not send a text message or email – just a pop up alert received via mobile data – make sure you have your notifications set up properly so your phone makes a sound/vibrates etc. It does take a week or so to settle down – be prepared for multiple “false” alarms after you first install it.The webcam quality is great – even when using night vision – the picture is very sharp. It has quite a wide angle so video coverage is good. You need a decent broadband connection with a good upload speed otherwise there will be quite a delay in accessing the webcam. For me the most obvious flaw (which I believe Cocoon are working to resolve per their Q&A on the website) is that any member of your household or regular visitor to your home who has installed the app and has been granted access to access “your” Cocoon can remotely watch the live feed from the webcam and listen in which you may not want. We wanted to set up Cocoon on a neighbour's phone who was feeding our cat whilst way but we had second thoughts as we couldn't be sure they would delete the app when asked. Once someone has been granted access the only way (currently) to delete their access rights is to make sure they delete the app from their phone – you can’t manage user access once it has been granted. (As a last resort a factory reset would probably clear all users but you would have to go through the set up again and the learning process.) Cocoon definitely need to develop better administrator functionality I believe - hence only 4 star rating and not 5 star.Overall however Cocoon does what it says on the tin – as a surveillance device covering the whole house it’s very good. It filters out normal sounds and will alert you to abnormal noise in your home and/or movement detected in its immediate vicinity and record / store that activity for 7 days. Even if you already have a fixed wire intruder alarm Cocoon will supplement your security – if you don’t this is far better than having nothing. It's worth noting it has no battery back up unlike a traditional intruder alarm - if your house power goes down it won't work. If your wi-fi / broadband fails it won't work either. However that said it’s very reassuring to be able to see and listen to your home via Cocoon and overall I'm pleased with the purchase.

I love this is exactly what I was looking for
I kept looking at the classic kinds of security systems. I didn't buy any of them. I kept looking and reading. I found Cocoon, and WOW it was just what I wanted. So,small and it does it ALL. I feel this is our answer. So easy to set it up, and so far it does everything I expected it to do. Give it a test drive. I am over 70 and it was totally easy to start up I highly recommend this product to keep you and your home safe. The alarm is loud and should scare anyone off.

Doesn’t work at all with Alexa that we can figure out so yet another app on our devices to manage.
Crazy difficult to get the app installed. In the end we had to install it twice and can’t delete the first attempt so it’s confusing to use. For the money I made a bad choice. We have the Ring and find it really easy and useful and wanted something for the back door with a siren.

Had high Hopes
The problem I had was it wouldn't link with my router If you have Spectrum cable and Arris router stop right now and find something else I really wanted to like this item. I just think if you going to sell something like this it should be tested thoroughly the customer was amazing and was willing to help but I was hoping a more plug and play everything else I use works great with my wireless modem. I also has Iphone7 plus everything was updated this is the screen I had for over 1 hour time I wish the update gave a percentage so you know if it is updating. I power rest everything and hard rest Cocoon.
