This is a gift - does it come with instructions on use?

I don't remember but it's quite simple. You open the unit, place a felt pad and put essential oil drops on the felt pad. Attach to the air vent and as the air blows over, the scent of the essential oil fills the car. I have purchased 3 or 4 units as gifts for friends and everyone loved it.

Does anyone think using a pad other than the original felt ones might hold the fragrance better than one that comes with it?

I have the same problem with holding fragrances. I love the idea of them but have found nothing to use in them that's natural and that will hold a fragrance for more than a few days. I went back to traditional air fresheners.

Mine is very hard to open. I've tried prying the little cutout with everything. Any tips?

I just opened where the slot is using my fingernail. It's a strong magnet. Try a flathead screwdriver in the slot and give a little twist and see if that works
