It was originally developed by an engineer commissioned by the government to find a solution to how the population in the villages can prepare food without the risk of lighting the cabin and, in worst, the whole village. You get smoke for 5 minutes and then you’re good to go. I’ve found that I need a charcoal lighter thing to get them going, forget throwing a match on there. I’ve also used half a dozen briquettes instead and they do a great job on the cobb, it just takes longer to get them going as you would expect. Personally, I will use the cobblestones when I can’t be bothered waiting for briquettes to get going, but briquettes are by far the best value for money. It’s also very rare that we ever need a two hour burn time. Maybe they should slim them down to one hour and half the price?! As if! The single stone lights very easily, as each one is already impregnated with something, they also get up to heat within a few minutes. They are not particularly cheap, but a box contains six stones so lasts for six BBQ's The stones don't flame to start with so you don't think they are alight but you notice a greyness creeping across the coal. I think they get hotter than normal briquettes too. How long do they last?** A: Hi,There are 6 in a box, once you have lit 1 of them, you can't put it out and re-light it. 1 Cobbstone lasts about 1hr 20min. **Q: If fat drips on them do they smoke at all? Mainly asking for using outside a flat, I don't want to annoy the neighbours with any kind of smoke** A: Yes, if fat drips onto the cobblestone it would smoke , however most of the cooking surfaces do not allow fat to drain , e.g. Grill plate, frying pan and wok. **Q: Could i light 1 and place a mess tin on toptop to boil water?** A: Yes you could but would be a waste as the mess Tim will boil in about 10min and a Cobb brick burns about 2 hours.
