What I understood was that the stone, as it is ceramic is measured in microns. This stone I saw advertised as 3 micron which converts to 8,000 grit. I love mine. I still use a leather strop for the final honing which is probably overkill based on how fine the spider stone is. **Q: Will this stone work on my Japanese knives at 62 rockwell?** A: I use this for my straight razor **Q: So, I see some say it isn't perfectly flat and they use different methods coarse DMT, etc. to flatten it, so won't that "rough" it up too much?** A: I had the same concern as you so did not use a dmt diamond to grind the ceramic flat. The many tiny hills and valleys on the ceramic surface are very apparent after sharpening a knife because the tops of the hills get dirty but the valleys do not. But even without being perfectly flat the ceramic works well.
