Powerful, durable and easy to handle - a superb set of loppers for tougher garden jobs
Exceptionally well made, these Spear & Jackson telescopic ratchet loppers make light work of thicker branches and tougher pruning tasks. The telescopic handles extend smoothly with a simple twist, giving excellent reach without feeling unwieldy, and the ratchet mechanism means you can apply steady, consistent pressure rather than brute force - ideal for more substantial cuts. They feel incredibly sturdy in use, with none of the flex or looseness that you sometimes find in cheaper models, and the blades slice through even dense wood cleanly. The build quality is exactly what you’d hope for from Spear & Jackson - solid, reliable and clearly built to last. They look good too, with a professional finish that matches their performance. After plenty of use, mine are still cutting as efficiently as the day they arrived, and the extending mechanism continues to work smoothly. A dependable, well-engineered tool that makes garden maintenance far less effort and far more satisfying.

A pleasure to use this excellent tool
Spear & Jackson 8100RS Razorsharp Telescopic Ratchet Anvil Lopper I don't write too many reviews, but I was so impressed with these loppers that I felt I must make the effort to do so. I read other reviews before ordering and hoped that the tool would be as good as many people said - and it was!... MUCH better than I expected. It really is sharp, and that, together with the ratchet, makes cutting through branches (up to AT LEAST an inch thick) a doddle. Branches that previously I'd have used my pruning saw to cut through were dealt with effortlessly by these loppers. My first job was to cut down shrubbery branches that were overhanging the street, some quite thick and many quite high - and normally I'd need a step ladder (and pruning saw) to deal with these. So here came the test for the extension capability of these loppers. No problem - cut down with ease and no step ladder needed. After about fifteen to twenty minutes work, I admired my huge pile of chopped down branches (thick and thin). The biggest job was clearing away the pile afterwards. Now I've read in some reviews that these loppers were heavy; well I'm a lady of 'a certain age' and I had no problem with the weight. I would admit it made my arms ache just a bit when reaching up to cut, but that would apply to anything if reaching up for more than a few minutes. I'd go so far to say it was actually a pleasure to use this tool, saving both time and effort. Done a couple of jobs with it now, and more to do. Finally I would add that the loppers are sturdy and robust and I hope they will stand the test of time. If they don't I will update this review.

Nice and sharp
First bought some at Proper Job for £15 but returned and bought those, way way better and telescoping.

Cut above the rest
Fantastic loppers made my job so easy! The ratchet style made it feel like cutting through butter. They are durable and have a good solid build. I did a lot of cutting off branches from 15ft and 10ft fern trees, which I believe are made of dense wood. I found it comfortable to hold, and there was no hand strain at all. All branches were also cut into smaller pieces for the tun bag, so they had a good workout. The handle extension lock is solid too.

A really nice idea not quite engineered to perfection
A really nice idea not quite engineered to perfection. It does a wonderful job the ratchet pivot works superbly - I was able to cut Yew Branches 1 inch thick and Ash ones at least 11/2 inches by using the kinetic advantage this system gives. a 2 inch branch yielded to multiple cuts - it is quite easy to turn the jaws without opening them fully and cut another groove in the same place until the branch gives way. On long extension the arms flex but the rapid chop technique takes care of this - do not simply apply more brute force its not the way this device works. My only criticism is that one of the handle ferrules came out of the tube about the third time I changed length - I shall glue it in for next time with double sided tape. The locks on the lengthening tubes were stiff but on the whole better stiff than sloppy. The blade still seems sharp - and it is sharp quite different to those on bypass loppers - in fact it can be used to cut soft vegetation as well but a one hand pruner works quicker with less effort for that stuff.

Perfect tool
Brilliant tool for the garden, extends to an impressive length. I found them quite heavy to use but soon got used to them and they are way better than my other loppers. VERY sharp and gives a clean cut on all my thickest shrubs and branches. Solid and very reliable for all my jobs in the garden.

Great lightweight lopper but not as tough as claimed - but with a great guarantee.
I have owned a pair of these loppers for 2 years and used them to prune live and dead branches and saplings up to 1 Inch or so in diameter. They are very sharp, easy to use and lightweight - as well as good looking! However the aluminium handles with their twist end lock could be improved. I managed to bend the inner handle of one arm after several months of use preventing the lopper handle from extending as the inner and outer handle were now jammed together. The twist lock is also not too effective and often would slip allowing the inner to drop back into the outer sleeve when using the loopers in handle extended mode. Although I continued to use the loppers in the unextended mode for another 18 months, eventually the metal which extends from the aluminium handle and then becomes the cutting jaw fractured and the nut/bolt assembly which allows the ratchet to function in cutting mode broke and fell out rendering the loppers useless. As I was about to throw them away I remembered that I bought these loppers specifically because they had a 10 YEAR GUARANTEE - so I contacted Amazon and sure enough I received a replacement set in the post in a few days! The replacement set of loppers lasted 2 years of moderate use before the metal which extends into the handle sheared (again) while in use. I contacted Amazon who refused to replace the item but suggested I contact Spear & Jackson - which I did and received a replacement set a week later! I should also add that they performed as well as or better than the other loppers I have owned, so I do recommend them despite the fact I managed to break them after 2 years of use - now on 2 occasions! At least I have had them replaced FoC each time under guarantee.
