does it mute as well as the heavy metal mute?

Yes, this works amazing! This video of a girl playing with it on and off https://youtu.be/i8W5HT6AW60 helped me decide b/c you can totally hear the difference. They also compare how it sounds inside and outside a room w/ the door closed. Another benefit to this particular mute over the all metal one is that you don't have to worry about it damaging your violin if it happens to fall off, etc.

Can you loosen the screws so the mute will sit lower on a thicker bridge? You can adjust it to fit thicker bridges?

I don't think this mute is adjustable. But if you're thinking that it doesn't fit because you have a thicker bridge, that probably isn't the case. This mute just doesn't fit all the way over the bridge. It's normal for this mute to sit up high.

Can this be used for cello as well?

I don’t think so due to the size difference in the bridge. You may want to Google cello mutes to double check!

screws are for decoration only

This certainly does the job. It is a nice heavy metal mute covered in rubber. It stays on the violin and the sound is very quiet, but good. However, I think that it is too expensive for what it is and the only reason I was willing to spend on it was because I thought that the screws made it adjustable. In fact they are there only for decoration.

Viola mute

Unable to put it on the bridge of Yamaha viola at all. Tried to open slots a bit more with a screwdriver but unsuccessfully. I will try to shave off some of the rubber , like other reviewer suggested. This is all in all unacceptable , especially given the price.
