Cien Años de Soledad (50 Aniversario) / One Hundred Years of Solitude: Illustrated Fiftieth Anniversary Edition of One Hundred Years of Solitude

I first read this novel in an English language translation (the Picador edition) nearly forty years ago. By then it was already twenty years since its first publication but it seemed very fresh and recent, like the world that the Buendia family and their companions discovered in the heart of the South American jungle. Magical realism was becoming very popular at the time and South American writers were the dog’s proverbials, so I went on to read a lot more Marquez, as well as Vargas Llosa, Borges and Isabel Allende. Muchos anos despues, as Marquez would have said, I’m trying to teach myself to read Spanish and my aim is to read all those great novels again in their authors’ intended language. It’s a challenge. Although I remembered lots of passages from this novel, much of the vocabulary was unfamiliar to me and I spent almost as much time with my head in the dictionary as I did reading the novel. Even so, it was worthwhile. This is one of the great novels of the twentieth century and I would recommend it to anyone. Read it in your language of choice and marvel at the sheer brilliance of it.

Beautifully presented and such lovely illustrations. I read this book several times in the past but this is the nicest edition I have seen so far.

This book was a gift and I absolutely LOVED it. It’s beautiful, colorful and very sturdy (even though it’s quite heavy). The packaging was however very inefficient as it came wrinkled and destroyed. Had to return

He leído " Amor en tiempos del cólera " de la misma edición y estoy fascinada por las ilustraciones. Te llevan a vivir la historia de manera más íntima. Ahora empiezo con "100 años de soledad". Qué se puede decir más de un genio literario! Hay que leerlo!
