Cooking in that way, there are yummy bits and stuff that I don't want to filter out. But every bit of fat renders from my meats. This separator is excellent for that. I let the juices cool off in the fridge in the separator, then remove all that mow solidified fat off the top of the separator. You might want to filter the bits from the juices, so you would use that filter topper that comes with the separator. But what I find impressive is that I keep all those big and small bits in the juices, and this separator still stays sealed in the bottom spout! That's over about two years of use. I will NOT be using a dishwasher to wash this as it simply messes up plastic in the long run, and it doesn't take too long to do so. What they mean by "safe" must be different from whether or not this plastic device will survive a couple of years of a hot dishwasher and still look/function like new. It won't.. **Q: How do you clean the silicon portion of the cup? Are the parts at the bottom exposed so that we still need to clean the parts at the bottom?** A: Yes. It’s esposed. I had to run hot soapy water through it. Then I put in the dishwasher. **Q: Would this work for separating melted butter to make clarified butter?** A: That's a great question! I make a lot of cheeses, stocks, and clarified butter. What I do is lay a single-folded piece of muslin or cheesecloth material on top of the lid. When I pour liquids through, even the smallest bits get completely strained by the cheesecloth before going into the cup. **Q: Has anyone used this for pancake batter?** A: I’ve only used it when making gravy which had a relatively thin consistency.
