Is there storage for the chess pieces?

Yes it comes in a box, plus has individual places for the chess pieces.

Are the pieces are plastic? What is the size of the pieces?

They are a solid plastic. Between 2-4 inches in height.

Is the board plastic also?

Hi Leslie! The chess board is a colorful and durable, heavy cardboard. We hope this information is helpful!

Are the chess pieces surface painted or does the color penetrate into the plastic? Just wondering if chipping will become an issue with use.

No, I don't believe chipping will be a problem. The paint in within the plastic, so there's no way that it's going to chip or fade, unless you're being unnaturally rough with it. And the pieces are rather durable, or at least they feel that way. You should have nothing to worry about.
