It feels like some kind of cardboard in the peak so I have only rubbed it with a damp cloth

what is the cap peak made of

The peak is wool but it has some sort of harder material inside, which obviously you can't see unless you take it apart. One thing I would say is that I've had problems with this seller, with orders being very late or not arriving at all. They're not keen to help, when I requested a refund after waiting 2 months they emailed me in German. I've had to take it up with Amazon to get a refund.

Is the grey really dark or really pale or some where in between ?

This is a really nice grey, warm shade and medium. Not silver grey and not dark somewhere in between similar to the school uniform grey.
