Hamlet (Wordsworth Classics)

A robust and accurate paperback text
I bought this edition of Hamlet as I needed a sturdy copy of the play that was easily portable in terms of size and weight. I was a little worried because some reviewers had raised doubts as to the quality of the edition, but I can now say that these are misplaced. I have used the book quite intensively for a few months, underlining text and writing notes in it, but the binding is still holding up well. The paper quality is good, the typescript is of a decent size, and the layout of the text is easy on the eye. There is a brief but balanced introduction (which is particularly useful for such an iconic play with so rich a history); a biographical note on Shakespeare; and an informative few pages in which the editor (a professor of English at the University of Sussex) explains which text he has chosen to include from the various iterations of the play. As someone who is familiar with Hamlet, both as a reader and a theatre-goer, I applaud his choices. The text also has line numbers and footnotes (the notes are at the back of the volume and so do not clutter the page), and a generous glossary for those who might be unfamiliar with the subtleties of the language used by England's greatest writer. The publisher has really got this edition right. It's neither fussy nor pretentious; it just allows the poetic text of this beautiful tragedy to speak for itself. If you buy this book you can have a working copy of the greatest single piece of literature yet produced by humankind, and you can have it for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

Great for A Level English Literature
Purchased for my English Lit A Level and it is great, a little flimsy to write in but was expected for the price, it gets the job done and overall I’m very happy.

There's the rub!
Hamlet says "For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil..." Well, he met the ghost of his dad earlier. So he must have an idea, no?Despite the contradictions, this is arguably the best English language play ever written.

There are better versions
Lots to commend this version, not least the low price. But having all the explanation words at the back gets tiresome flicking back and forth. Also you don't know which words are in the glossary . End up searching for word not there or there are words I thought I knew but have changed meaning. There is nothing to indicate which words have a description . Context text is good.

Shake my speare
Oh shakespeare, whom I'll never understand. But I certainly do appreciate his work. Filled with tragedy and a bit of times when it'll make you feel uncomfortable. The book arrived in good condition and I noticed that it has some extra dialogue that has been cut from other books which is good.
