Good value
I am surprisingly pleased at how good this magnifying light unit is for the price. It is attached to a solid sound base with a stem high enough to use when sitting in an armchair. The movable stem is long enough to reach while sitting in the centre of an armchair with wide arms and the magnifying glass is large and focused at the same place over the whole glass. By this I mean that the strength does not deminish as it reaches the edge of the glass. It has the same strength and view over the whole piece of glass. I hope this makes sense as I have had magnifying glasses in the past which I could only focus in the centre without having to move the unit. When embroidering or any other close work the chance is that both hands are in use and therefore it is not easy to have to keep moving the glass in order to focus. There is no need to move this magnifying glass as it remains in focius across the whole glass. The LED lights give a very bright working light and can be adjusted to suit. Overall I would highly recommend this unit for close work, easy of assembly and reach when wanting to site in a comfortable armchair to work from.

Good quality light and lens, works very well.
Seems reasonably sturdy, and well built. I bought it for electronics work at home. Light is bright, better than my 12V halogen desk lamp for illuminating work. In fact, I use it as a desk lamp as well. It seems a 'cold' colour temperature like daylight, as opposed to 'warm' filament bulb white. This is due to a stronger blue part of its spectrum, which contains blue and yellow. White LEDs are actually blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor. You can tell this by looking through the lens at a strip of white paper near the edge of the lens with a black background. The very edges of the paper will have a deep blue and yellow tinge. Lens doesn't have a feint green tint like some cheaper glass does. I worried that it was plastic, which scratches easier than glass and might be attacked by organic solvents like isopropanol. I wrote to the suppliers and they said it really was glass, so that is good. Lamp runs cool, which I appreciate when working on boards with tiny electronic components and I am so close that my nose is touching the lamp. I have a fluorescent magnifying lamp at work and that is very warm. The 5V 0.8A power supply is slightly warm, which suggests it is efficient and not overworked. Lamp housing is held together with four self-tapping screws, so it is possible to open and repair. The LEDs are soldered to a ring-shaped circuit board so require soldering irons to replace. However, good quality LEDs should last decades, unlike filament and fluorescent tubes which you expect to have to replace every so often. Some people reported a failure mode where one or two LEDs start flickering. LEDs don't die that way, they tend to slowly dim over time. My guess is the power supply failing. As the voltage comes one, the last LEDs take the current over what the PSU can supply, the PSU briefly cuts out, the last LEDs go out, the PSU turns on, and this cycle repeats rapidly to form a flicker. Nobody's manufacturing process is perfect, so if you get a faulty one just ask for a replacement. I'm very pleased with this product so far. £50 is not so cheap the makers have to cut corners, nor is it terribly expensive.

PURElite, Excellent Product
If you are going to spend over £50-00 including P&P to discover something is over-priced then by far this is the best £50 + I have spent in the last few months --you won't know that unless you buy one---and may not think it anyway--------but what price a good tool? This magnifying lamp comes in two colors as far as I am aware, PC beige or black, available from various sellers, some selling it a good deal more expensively then this seller, I purchased the beige one. It takes just minutes to assemble,( no tools required ), and once done is pleasing and functional in design. It could, imo, do with an additional rise and fall facility via the up-stand but that's an observation not a criticism and the snake head copes well in use. Nice large on/off button on the head and it runs very cool, I used it for 6 hours straight on the day I received it, ( taking iPads/iPhones apart ), very comfortable in use, tiny amount of heat output and the diode lights are bright and light up the work piece, effectively and pleasantly.--- just great. The magnifying glass, ( which is not glass ), is about 6 inches in circumference but as with most magnifiers you will always get distortion around their edges/rim but the effective work area of the glass in use is well over 5 inches which I find excellent. The unit will work off the mains or 4 x C size standard/rechargeable batteries, the battery holder clips to the up-stand or can be fixed to a wall and the unit comes with a big clamp which attachés to the end of the snake head end should you wish to clamp to a work bench/shelf instead of using the stand. I have neither used the clamp or the battery facility so can't really comment, the mains charger and battery holder lead plug into the snake head end of things so is fully portable. Users may find the up-stand a little unsteady when adjusting the snake head, it doesn't bother me but I found if the head needed further adjustment positions both hands were required to acheive this. The snake head its self is pleasingly flexable, not overly stiff and for the most part holds it position. I am left to wonder how for so long I managed with out one of these lamps. No doubt there are much more expensive magnifying lamps out there, with a higher degree of magnification and will/may do a better job. However, I am so happy with my purchase.

dearolddaddy's illuminated magnifyer
I am disabled so have lots of hobbies to pass time. I have always looked with envy at Daylight magnifying lamps hoping one day to get 1. I saw this lamp on Amazon and was amazed by the price. Considerably lower than a Daylight equivalent. Deciding to order it and was totally surprised when it arrived the next day. The product was very safely packaged to avoid any chance of damage. It required a little assembly and I chose the floor version. impressed by the quality and strength. The flexible section was very flexible and held all positions I set. The magnifying glass was excellent at 2x it gave good clear images. The lighting is by 24 diodes and reflectors giving a cool slightly blue light simulating daylight. Overall this is a well made quality product which does exactly what is says on the box at a reasonable cost. If you need a 6" wide magnifying area in either of the three modes this is definitely the one to buy. I give the product 10/10 and the trader is worthy of the highest Recommendation.

Excellent buy
I recently purchased this magnifying lamp after using a magnifier around my neck and a standard lamp for a number of years. I find the Purelite 3 a real bonus and improvement on my previous arrangements! The lamp was easy to set up and is light and easy to manoeuvre around the room if you want to change where you sit. The arm is very flexible and easy to position over your work. The magnification combined with the lighting gives a real clear view of your work. I use it mainly for cross stitch samplers and even on a dark winters night and in very poor lighting it provides a brilliant view of your work area. It is easily removed from the main stand to have it on the table top or clamped to the edge of a table or worktop. The clamp is substantial and feels adequate for the job. I have used my plugged in to an electrical socket but can envisage using it on summer nights on the balcony with the use of batteries. All round, an excellent buy which I would highly recommend.

Well above average
My fiancee has outstanding nails, which means they need care and attention. I could see that with less than perfect eyesight, this was becoming difficult, and she just didn't enjoy the process. I knew that a magnifying lamp would help tremendously and proceeded to search the web. Lens size/quality and lighting quality were obvious priorities, but probable use would be at her dressing table, around which there was little free floor space; this meant that bulk, flexibility and overall size were also important. Lots of affordable results were found, but many of these had disproportionally large lighting units or very small lenses in relation to the head size. I've got to say that this is the perfect item! A solid, but compact base with smooth lines and the option of varying hight by using it with or without the solid poles provides security and stability either on the floor of the lounge, or on the dressing table without stealing too much space. The lamp head is also slim, compact and pleasantly designed, with a flexible stem which can be attached directly to the base for table top use, it holds a generously sized 2X magnifying lens, which is surrounded by lots of bright LEDs with a close colour match to daylight. The unit is left on the dressing table, and looks as if it belongs there. Power is provided either by a low voltage mains adapter, or by clipping a supplied battery housing to the poles, which would make this easily portable around the house without trailing leads to mains sockets. The latter is my only criticism, the battery housing is a square box with a trailing supply lead, which detracts from the clean design. Perhaps the weight of batteries could have been put to use by incorporating them into the base.

The right tool for the job.....
I have purchased various magnifying lamps in the past and found fault with them: insufficient reach, too hot, unstable etc. This lamp meets all my needs. It can be used as a desk lamp, a floor lamp, and a clamp-on lamp. It can be mains or battery powered. The remarkable thing is that all these options are included in the price. The light produced is bright enough for close work (sewing, cross stitch, etc) without producing a glare. The LEDs warm up slightly but never get hot so if you're working close to the light source you won't burn yourself. The magnification is excellent. I wanted to be able to improve task lighting whilst "quilting in the ditch" on my sewing machine. This light has sufficient reach for me to be able to place the lamp on the floor to my right (lens/light positioned in front of needle) and have the quilt to my left. It is now possible to see what I'm doing without getting tangled. If you need a magnifying light with versatility I'd recommend this one.

Thank goodness it can run on batteries.
Nice craft magnifying lamp, but I should have realized from the description "Battery or mains operated" that the plug is for the UK, not US use. Since it comes with a battery pack that accepts C batteries, at least I can use it. My travel converter only fits US to "other", now I guess I'll have to buy a UK to US converter if I don't want to run this lamp solely on batteries. The item page would be improved with a clear photo of the plug.
