Is there a way to save the brightness setting? It keeps defaulting back to 10% each time I power it off.

No, but there is a workaround I found last week. In the settings menu, under "Brightness" there is the "ECO" option. This persists across plugging and unplugging. Text is 50%, web is 60% and movie is 100%. Use one of these presets and it should stay at that brightness level all the time.
