Ear protector doesnt clip in to visor?! Was ok on old (same) one which I bought this to replace (mouldy,my fault!)

The visor is on a band that goes around your head, and there is a tightening knob in the back to set the tension. The ear protection is like a headphone and can be removed for separate use or clipped in to the side of the headband to form one complete unit. When I am clearing brush I use the entire unit, but I will unclip the ear protector and use it by itself when just mowing the lawn.

Can you detach the ear muffs if need be?

The ear muffs are not connected to the mesh visor.

No they can't be turned up when not needed which is a bit annoying, but they are extremely comfortable to wear, good hearing protection with the convenience of eye protection that doesn't steam up unlike safety glasses.

I’ve been informed that strimmers should have a plastic visor and chainsaws should have a mesh visor, why is this a mesh type

I bought mine to use with a chainsaw - there are some quite large "chunks" of wood that can fly towards your face at speed when cutting into tree branches. Not sure I would rely on a plastic visor in those circumstances. A mesh visor seemed the right choice from my limited experience using a chainsaw.
