Long regarded as the classic introduction to the teachings of the Talmud, this comprehensive and masterly distillation summarizes the wisdom of the rabbinic sages on the dominant themes of Judaism. "To some readers of this book, the Talmud represents little more than a famous Jewish book. But people want to know about a book that, they are told, defines Judaism. Everyman's Talmud is the right place to begin not only to learn about Judaism in general but to meet the substance of the Talmud in particular . . . In time to come, Cohen's book will find its companion-though I do not anticipate it will ever require a successor for what it accomplishes with elegance and intelligence: a systematic theology of the Talmud's Judaism." --From the Foreword by Jacob Neusner This classic introduction reveals the wisdom of the rabbinic sages on such topics as the doctrine of God; God and the universe; the soul and its destiny; prophesy and revelation; physical life; moral life and social living; law, ethics, and jurisprudence; legends and folk traditions; the Messiah and the world to come. Review: A Brilliant and Condensed Portrait of Thinking Inherent in the Talmud - An extraordinary piece of scholarship, summarising into a systematic form, the basic theological/spiritual/cultural paradigms which both fed and are inherent in the Talmud. This work is helpful in redirecting the reader to the extraordinarily monolithic nature of Judaism across both time and geography, in contradistinction to much scholarship which seeks to – and often helpfully – shed light on the differences between various Jewish sects and periods. Abraham Cohen helps one to remember that Judaism is and has been both consistent in respect to key ideas about God and Israel, whilst producing breadth in the detail. Cohen reminds us that if you want the same hundred answers to one question, then ask a hundred rabbis how many gods there are. Review: Excellent summary. - A very good summary of the some of the key points in the Talmud. Easy to understand and read. Works well as a study aid, or for personal understanding. It basically paraphrases some of the main discussions around certain topics and explains why certain opinions were reached. As with the whole Talmud, it's an interpretation of opinions and Torah teachings. Would recommend as a good second stage book, as you need some basic understanding for it to make sense. It doesn't cover everything, and a more in-depth student might find it too basic. Was perfect for me though.

A must have book for all true believers
Paul quoted several times from the Talmud, we are always taught the "oral law" was not given by The Lord, but upon deeper study of scripture you will find its spoken of everywhere. So this is important book for all serious believers who want to understand from a Hebraic perspective. After all Yeshua (Jesus) was born a Jew and kept ALL his fathers Laws.

small but mighty
400 pages or so of classical jewish thought. i bought it as a reference work, but my wife loves it. She found the chapter entitled 'domestic life' to be absolutely superb containing some fascinating information which opened her eyes to the jewish perceptions of women and the home (particularly the sections on divorce and re-marriage) which helped her understand both the OT and the writings of Paul ore clearly. for this reason alone, I have to recommend it to anyone. but the books examines the biblical understanding of the ontology of God, cosmology, God's revelation through Torah, domestic life, social life, morality, life and death, folklore (including demons, the evil inclination, disease, etc), judicial issues and the age to come (including the messianic age). As an eye opener to the belief system of much of second temple judaism (the time of jesus and the apostles) it is worth owning.

Just what any Jew needs
This version of a select portion of the Talmud is perfect. It addresses all the big questions such as the nature of God, the Universe and many other important topics. It is a must read for anyone wanting a brief look at the Talmud.

Highly readable
The author has done a very good job of taking what could be a very dry subject matter and turning it into very readable and flowing text. I would definitely recommend this book.

Still a classic background text
Abraham Cohen's guide to the Talmud easily stands the test of time and, despite its age remains an easily accessible introduction. A secondhand copy of the text is a good, cheap starting point for the Talmud student

It’s like a photocopy of the original book.
Very poor print. Some pages not well printed. Poor quality paper too.

De Talmoed uitgelegd voor geïnteresseerde leken.
Mooi overzicht van de hoofdlijnen van de talmoedische leer. Vaak hoor je over de Talmoed allen anekdotes, hier gaat het om de inhoud. Nuttig, overzichtelijk.

A really great version of the Talmud for the here and now
I've been finding that this is helpful in studying the Torah. It gives lots of things to think about as it is a oral tradition. It's more or less having Rabbi's right along side of you with discussing the traditions and giving you a good amount of knowledge of most every question you might have about living your life according to Torah. With Torah 'meaning instructions ' one is always going to have questions as to what something means. With the Talmud being a discussion helping to understand the questions you have. This particular Talmud I find alot to look forward to because it is easy to find what your looking for and then upon reading I find it gives me much understanding of what I need and am looking for. For such a small book its absolutely packed with information that you would be looking for that applies to the life here and now. I wish I had got this a long time ago. The only thing I wish is that it was the whole set of the Talmud because it would be so interesting, complete and I would love to read through them. But if your looking for a version of it that could be used everyday in the gere and now I would highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed.
