The mermaid requires 2 x aaa batteries, it can be a bit fiddly to get the batteries into the back and is quite easy to actually break the battery case, so be careful with this. I also bought the fish bowl to go with this and to be honest it is not great for allowing the mermaid to swim in it, I don't think it is big enough. The bath is much more suitable and fun to watch the mermaid swim along in.
