Works flawlessly as an external display. Great quality of the panel.
I purchased the product to be used exclusively as an external monitor for my 2017 Macbook pro 13'. It seamlessly connects to my laptop via the usb c port to transfer picture, sound and power to the Macbook by a single cable. I can confirm that the voltadge is enough to fully charge the 13 inch Macbook pro and once the battery is fully charged the laptop uses the monitor as a power source without using the battery (I suggest you check the voltage required by your device). I can also confirm that if the laptop turns to sleep due to inactivity, all it takes is a press of a button of the mouse or keyboard for the monitor to automatically turn back on with no need to disconnect and reconnect the usb c cable. I am as overall extremely satisfied with the performance of the unit as well as he quality of the IPS panel.

Excellent picture quality but no built in speaker
The average tech consumer will find this LG display monitor excellent. It comes with a nice sturdy stand that allows you to easily adjust the height and even rotate the monitor so you can have it in portrait mode. I have mine on a monitor arm/bar which I think looks nicer and allows for more desk space. The monitor has enough connection ports for the average user, 2 HDMI, 2 USB and 1 USB type C which is great because all you need is one cable to connect your Macbook or Dell XPS laptop giving you picture and charges your laptop at the same time. The USB C port also allows you to daisy chain your USB enabled devices so the LG Monitor then acts as a USB hub. Many have stated it wont charge certain power hungry laptops like the 15" Macbook Pros, I cannot confirm this, but just bear this in mind. Also be aware that the USB type C is not Thunderbolt. The display is excellent, with a resolution of 3840X2160 which is considered 4K but there are a few things I don't love about this monitor. The control panel to control the settings (ie brightness, picture in picture, input selection etc) is literally one button, this is very finicky and takes some getting used to, but for those who would prefer you can download an LG software that lets you control the monitors setting on screen. Finally, this is not particularly a deal breaker for me but for it's price I wish it came with built in speakers. Over all it's a very good monitor and if you can live with the negatives I mentioned then go for it other wise I recommend the LG 27UD850 which has slightly better specs and includes a built in speakers. Hope this helps your purchase decision.

It's the Ronseal deal - does what it says on the tin!
Bought to go with my Dell XPS 9350 laptop, so the USB-C support was the decider. Pro: excellent display, crisp, clear, and powers the laptop. Plenty of adjustment on the height - no need for an adjustable VESA mount. Con: the rear-mounted USB ports mean that they cannot be used for wireless mouse/keyboard/audio dongles, as the display effectively screens them. The screen will default to be the main audio device even if there is nothing plugged into the headphone socket. Both of these are minor inconveniences.

Not compatible with Mac!
The main problem with this monitor is its resolution. 4K on a 27" screen size is a very unfriendly resolution for Mac users. This is because Mac OS is designed to work well in the 100 dpi range or, as a "retina", in the 200 dpi range. This monitor falls right in between those values, as indeed do all the 4K 27" monitors out there. It seems that manufacturers have found it convenient to make 4K 27" panels and are trying to shove them to consumers, even though it is not what works best for consumers. This monitor is UHD, which means that it can be used as a native 4K monitor (the "more space" option in the Mac settings) and in that case everything on the screen is so small that you cannot read it unless your face is 10 inches from the screen. Or you can use it natively as a 1080p "retina" option, that is as 4xFHD resolution - the "default for this display" in the Mac settings. That gives you lovely crisp text, but it is also way too big: you have to sit much further away from the display than most people would want to. Most users will instead choose an in-between resolution: 2560x1440, or 1440p, because at that resolution, with the Mac OS interface, a 27" canvas looks just right. The problem is, if you set your resolution to "looks like 2560x1440" you lose all the advantage of having purchased a 4k monitor, force your graphics card to do nasty scaling, and may see some artifacts or blurry fonts. I cannot stress this enough: if you are running a 4k monitor as a 2560x1440, you are wasting your money. You should have bought a (good quality) 2560x1440 monitor instead. Let's say it plainly: for a Mac, the "correct" resolution for a 27"-32" monitor is 2560x1440, or 4x that for 'retina', which is a 5K display: 5120x2880. This is a serious usability problem for Mac users that not many people talk about (and the industry is trying to 'hush'). I suspect many of the users of this monitor set the 'wrong' 2560x1440 resolution and then are unimpressed with the display's quality. But the display is excellent when used at its native resolution! It's just a Mac unfriendly model. Do you think it is a coincidence that now that LG released two monitors in partnership with Apple, they went for a 21.5" 4K and a 27" 5K? Those are the same sizes and resolutions as the iMac. That is what works best on a Mac. Like many others, I decided to ignore this problem, even though I knew about it, because I wanted to see if it was all an exaggeration made up by some pedantic resolution freaks. It's not. This is the reason I will ultimately be returning this monitor and I will buy a 24" 4K monitor with USB-C...when someone makes it!

The obvious choice for an Apple MacBook
I bought this specifically to use with my new MacBook and it is fantastic. It connects with a single USB-C cable (provided) and keeps the MacBook powered. I like the fact that it also has a couple of USB3 ports in the back (as the MacBook has none). Originally I had it configured as a secondary screen but now close the MacBook and park it in a vertical dock just using the LG and an Apple wireless keyboard. The screen quality is excellent and high enough resolution to work on multiple documents simultaneously.

Its big and sleek
It's amazing, i bit too expensive but in the end worth every penny. The colours are great, very black blacks. And the all in one cable is great

Spreading the word on good monitors
# I am by no means a monitor expert. I purchased the 27UD88 purely down to its USB Type-C connectivity, which works faultlessly so far. If this isn't a necessary requirement for you, I would recommend choosing a different monitor. Type-C seems to add a premium on every monitor it's featured on. The monitor is colour calibrated in factory. Results vary, but my unit displays them accurately without any lines. The monitor has both pivot and vertical adjustment, which is the greatest feature but has a few flaws. The display pivot is tough to adjust because the stand is flimsy and the pivot mechanism does not hold its position. The display menu toggle switch feels like it will fall out and seems to be poorly attached. However, once you adjust all the settings and monitor position, it's an amazing monitor. I will edit the review if the monitor gives up within a year. Edit: having only two USB-A ports was crippling, so I added a generic USB hub + USB ethernet which both work from the monitor power.

LG monitors and the future
Nice monitor that does most of what is expected. Very disappointed about the back light leaks which is conspicuous when the screen goes black. Found out itโs an inherent fault, but LG needs to take heed of such blatant design defects and do something about it in future generations of this type of product. That way, quality assurance can be improved and customer loyalty maintained.
