Canoe Paddles: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own

Gotinterested in canoing through the kids doing it.Many years ago made canoes and kayaks at school found it very interesting when you made and used your own. I was fedup using club equipment wanted a paddle that was personal well balanced the correct size for me. I bought the book spent time deciding on which one to make and made a Voyager that worked verywell. My young son (13) is now making one now to his measurements he didn't realise how easy it is to make if you take your time and work with the wood. The hardest part is deciding which one to make first and finding the correct wood which is part of the fun. I will be making a collection of paddles in the near future due to reading this book and having the satisfaction of using a paddle you have made yourself. I am not very experienced at working with wood just the usual DIY and this book made it so easy. Highly recommended if you want that bit extra out of canoing.

Great for anyone wanting to make paddles. I am a paddle maker, I bought this to see what other people did. Honestly, I didn't learn much from it as if I was going to write a book on paddle I would do it very similar to this one. I am a professional carpenter and joiner and have all the tools. So if you follow this you will do ok. If I had one complaint as a European, It would be helpful to have had the designs in metric as well as imperial. However, it is fun translating them. The measurements are in inches and 1/32. This takes a little getting your head around as it will look something like this: 2 3/32 which is 2" and 3/32.

Book was delivered quickly but when the box was opened the top corner of the front cover was ripped before anything was taken out of the box. Box and all other items not damaged and packaged well so would have been damaged pria to being packed. Other than that brilliant book.

in this book you have 2 different approach to canoe paddle making one its very detailed with precision, building paddles from boards, or glue it with different woods, other more traditional approach building by eye and feeling from tree or board, or you can combine both how you like. Book has a lot of different style paddles with detailed descriptions, also good historical canoe paddles section . Has also plans for otter tail, beaver tail, voyageurs, and river paddles. Book written very clear and has easy to to follow step by step instructions. If you like canoing and want to have good paddle, but don't want to spend bunch of euros, buy better this book and board, skill that you will get, will always be in you had when you will need it.

Este libro esta muy bien y se lo recomiendo a todo aquel que quiera iniciarse en la construcción de palas de canoas o kayaks. Al final del libro hay varios planos a escala 1:1 que nos ayudaran a hacer los mangos de las palas.

I thought the book was great, very informative . What Graham is doing is telling you that there is more than one way to make paddles. You can use mostly power tools, or hand tools. Use what you have or get what you need. Paddle making is a good excuse to get a few new tools.i.e. Lee Valley spoke shaves, etc. Learn how to make half patterns from a table of offsets. Then go to it.Don't get overwhelmed, just get started. You will soon be hearing the song of the spokeshave. Your first paddle will be better than anything you can buy. Use it and you may see things you want to change on the next ones. Keep making paddles. Each gets better and easier. You will build confidence quickly and soon you will be working mostly by sight, Not laying out so much and having much more confidence. Grahams knowledge of paddle making is unsurpassed. This book is worth 3 times its cost.
