Brilliant. Some blatantly incorrect reviews
Some bizarre and frankly inaccurate comments here. Firstly, the one about not being able to simply put money on the SIM and use the credit as you need it, ie without any commitment, is simply not true. You can top up the SIM with as much as you like - via card, using O2's automated top-up phone service or by buying a voucher in a shop (eg newsagent) and using the same O2 top-up phone service (I did this earlier this week for reference). There may be other ways (eg by text) but I don't use them. You then use the credit as you use the phone. You don't use the phone - you don't use the credit/don't get charged anything (note that the comment about having to use the phone at least once in every 6 months in order to keep your number is correct). O2 no longer offer this type of SIM, which is why we're all buying here. If you look on the O2 website, it's true that the most similar current offering (at the time of writing) is a £5 per month bundle. However, that's not how you're supposed to use this SIM, else why not just get a free SIM from O2? This SIM works as I have detailed and as it is supposed to. Secondly, there's a comment about it being expensive and not a long-term option. This is entirely personal. For me, it is a long-term option and suits my needs perfectly; it also isn't "expensive" (see 1.) and is far cheaper for me than a monthly tariff. If you use your phone a lot for calls and data, then no this is not the best option for you because of the per mb of data/per minute of call-time charges and it won't be an economical alternative to a per-month bundle. However, none of this information is secret - work it out for yourself whether this option will be value for money/a good solution for you or not. Then there's the comment about newer SIMs being more expensive and the top-up being used in a day on a smart phone, versus lasting for three years on a non-smart phone. Let's file this under things that didn't happen. Also, if you check the charges as above, set up your smart phone correctly (paying heed to background data usage etc.) and are careful with your usage, then this isn't going to happen. Finally, you can port your number as usual. If you keep this as a back-up phone; or live abroad and just want a UK SIM to keep your UK number or to use whilst here on holiday; or don't make many calls (and/or generally use WhatsApp for them) and are typically on wifi, then this could be a great option for you, as it is for me.

Tariffs have changed
I bought this for a relative who just wants to top up now and again not every month. However this type of top-up doesn't exist anymore even on this SIM card. He has been able to set up a £5 per month bundle which is the cheapest option.
