Received mine a couple of weeks ago and it is perfectly smooth. Should work just fine for you. I am a watercolor artist and my one concern is the clip ONLY IF you work very close to the upper margin of your paper - there is a lip around the outer margin that would need to be padded to protect the texture of your paper. Will explain more about this as soon as I have the energy to post a full review.
