Review: Everything your little girl needs to know in a friendly format. - I bought this book for my almost 10 year old daughter. She been starting to ask general questions about the facts of life & before I launch into all the details I thought a good place to start was for her to get a greater understanding of how her body works & what she should expect to happen in the next couple of years. I did explain the basics to her before giving her this book. For a child who is not the most enthusiastic of readers she has read & re-read this book & it has prmopted some very sensible questions, that I wouldn't have thought of discussing with her. It has made her feel like she's been let into a grown up secret, she has commented that the book makes things seem matter of fact, without being at all scarey. It is written in a fun way that makes her feel that no question is too silly - which is isn't. Overall I would highly recommend as a good reference book for young girls & a great starting point for discussing the facts of life at some point in the future. I now at least feel she is prepared & has a better understanding of her body & won't be scared by all the silly playground talk.
Review: perfect, written in language a pre-teen understands!! - I bought this book along with two others, 'Dr Christians guide to growing up' & 'amazing you' ; and altogether these 3 books have covered things well With an 8 year old daughter and a family history of starting periods early, I wanted to tell my daughter what happens but was understandably cautious of giving too much information too soon, (a lot of books discuss sex in detail which I don't think she's ready for yet - I have not allowed her to freely read Dr Christians book yet!) This book is very well written and I felt it was age appropriate. My daughter commented; 'mum it's like someone is talking to me and not like reading a story'. The book covers what periods are; why women have them; being prepared (for getting them); the book also mentions health and exercise; a bit about friendships and feelings and about the fact that boys and girls may tease you. The writing style was what stood out most for me; everything is written as though your best friend is having a casual chat with you (and you are both aged 8-12). After briefly looking at the book together (and having discussed what happens) my daughter decided to read the book properly herself; she has regularly reported back to me with the new things she has learned and asked ' MUM did you know this?' :-) I recommend this book and am so glad books like this are available; I wish I'd had something like this to read when I was young!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Focusses on periods and not sex - phew !
*by D***E on 18 October 2011*

Ive been searching for a book on puberty for younger girls for some weeks and have read endless reviews always put off by references to sex and mastubation. My 10 year old doesnt receive sex education until the end of year 5 and had started getting back aches and sweating. I had a talk with her teacher, which I recommend, who really put my mind at ease and together we decided that the teacher would have a 'chat' with her. We wanted to prepare her so she wouldnt panic when a bleed came and would know what to do if it happened at school. This book was a perfect compliment to this chat, the images inside are of young girls, even younger looking that the colour image on the cover. The images and text are suitable for pre teens and very much a book to prepare you before your period. Much of the book deals with the practical side of having a period, what is a sanitary pad and how do you wear them. There is a brief section on the biology of a period, eg the release of the egg and a true or false section dispelling some of the myths. It did touch a little on growing up and sex and explained that sperm needs to fertilise the egg for a girl to become pregnant. But dont worry as it doesnt go into the mechanics of having sex and refers to this might happen when you are older etc. Ive loved this book but would have prefered no mention of having sex at this stage and therefore haven deducted 1 star. As a mother Ive found this a very emotional experience trying to project my little girls innocence and giving her the information she needs. I still hope that her period wont come until another year or two however I now feel we are both prepared if it does.
