No. They absolutely are NOT real silk. I wanted to know, too, so I used an inconspicuous and very small area of the color I liked the least and preformed the burn test. It did nothing but melt. Real silk will burn and smell like human hair burning. It melted a small hole and became hard, therefore it is completely synthetic. I am returning mine because of this.

Can these be doubled?

yes, and they hold and stay in the hair. My wife has fine, smooth hair. Most hair ties do not stay in place very well. These silk ties do, without pulling her hair out!
