Learn to cleanse your skin properly without destroying the lipid barrier (research AHAs and BHAs so you can figure out what you need for your skin concerns), use a light moisturiser that is suitable for eyes as well and then, if you really want to do something to help yourself long term, find a separate broad spectrum cream of SPF 30-50 that you apply as a final layer (don't buy SPF combined with a face cream - it makes it hard to switch moisturisers). There are cheap, no-sting versions for infants that will be OK around your eyes, and you use SPF regardless of the weather. In the evening, use the double-cleanse method to make sure you've got it all off. In your 20s, add a vitamin C serum (research reviews to make sure you don't pick one that oxidises before it does anything useful) and maybe peptides before your moisturiser. Do not use anything designed for men - they usually contain awful irritants like menthol, camphor, etc. I am looking at you, Bulldog. Go for fragrance free if you can. But steer well clear of plant oils until you get to know what's OK. Lavender oil, citrus oil (and limonene), geranium oil (and geraniol) are all irritants, as are wood oils like sandalwood, cedar, etc. Marula oil is nice - if your skin is dry, put it on after your moisturiser before bed. If you develop acne, do not dry it out or scrub it - use a gentle acid exfoliator and moisturise, and get to a dermatologist not your GP. I hope this all helps. I wish someone had told my husband. He had terrible red and flaky skin for years until I sorted him out, and I'm certain the damage from UV and blue light (computer screens and devices affect skin too) has aged him prematurely.
