Supergirl: Season 1 [DVD] [2015]

Good bluray series got here on time

I'm almost embarrassed to admit, as an adult, that I enjoyed this very much! My other half is into Flash (not Season 3 though!) and Arrow but those are far too visually dark for me and the endless flashbacks in Arrow (in particular) just got boring. I know nothing about previous Supergirl incarnations/films/comics/stories so am judging this purely as an entertainment programme. Compared to the 2 previously mentioned "superhero" series, this is visually completely different, very bright and normal(ish) in that Supergirl works in an office. There are no basements or laboratories involved, even the DEO headquarters are bright! Unusually, she is not tarted up to the eye-balls and wears normal clothes and flat shoes - Arrow & Flash females all teeter around on shy-high heels and party dresses all the time. This is probably done to differentiate between her day job and her "other" job but it makes a welcome change. Even better, her sister breaks the tradition on series such as these and has short hair! No compulsory tumbling identical locks for her, she actually looks like a real person instead of a Barbie clone. Without exception, every character here is interesting - no one annoys or has irritating mannerisms/habits. I believe that one or two of the characters have been "corrected politically" but I like them all. My favourite, to my surprise, is the boss played by Calista Flockhart. She has never been high on my list as good or interesting actresses but as Cat Grant she is fab-u-lous! She has the best lines in the whole thing and is happy to send herself up somewhat. It shouldn't be a SPOILER as it is obvious if you read the cast list, but I do hope that her replacement in the second series doesn't let the series down. Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist, is actually not bad. Even in costume with flowing hair, she has a certain steely demeanour about her. So, even if you aren't a young girl, this is a very entertaining series. Season 2 is on it's way so I hope it lives up to Season 1.

This series really is a breath of fresh air to the superhero TV genre. It's not dark or gritty, it's just fun! The characters, as usual for the TV Multiverse are all very good, well acted and believable. Of the four concurrent series in the TV multiverse (the others being Arrow s.4, Flash s.2 & Legends of Tomorrow s.1), this is the only one that has multiple villains and dark characters of note. That being said there is only one tie in to the other three series late into the teens of the episodes in which the link is explained involving a tag team with the Flash. This show has some great action sequences, but many of the shows best features come in the quiet moments, especially in the dialogue between Kara (Supergirl's alter ego) and Kat. A lot of people are praising that there is now a strong female superhero, yes it's admirable, and the whole cast, mostly female are all excellent. I agree, that being said, I don't praise it as a feminist accomplishment. I see it as a great story with well flushed out characters, I genuinely don't care what gender the characters are so long as they are of good quality. These are top notch. It's well worth a watch

I really want to give this show 5 stars, but I can't. It has great special effects, decent acting. Mellisa Benoist is great, I think. But some of the stories fall flat, some of the baddies are pretty lame and the way certain characters opinions change dramatically over insanely short periods of time are preposterous. I have read some reviews that slate the show calling it sexist and they actually have a point, the first 3-4 episodes of the show have a weird undercurrent of babying supergirl, like she's so inferior to superman, but once you get past those few episodes. It picks up. (minus a few dud episodes) Personally I found the flash episode to be poor. The flash had good banter and Melissa Benoist played the enthusiastic young need who had found a new best friend to a tea. But the baddies were two of the worst in the whole series. Also to top it off, the writers of the show made it so supergirl lives in a parallel universe to all the other dc television series' (it's almost like they had no faith in the show, it's like saying, "well nothing that happens in supergirl actually matters anyway, so what if it gets canned no one wants to watch a girl superhero anyway) but even with it's faults I am really looking forward to the next series. It has many faults, I really enjoyed watching it.

This is a brilliant blu ray box set. Love the story, love the characters and everything about it. The show revolves around the emergence of Supergirl into the DC universe. She is awkward, unsure of herself and eventually begins to kick butt. I am really glad they dont have Superman show up to much as she can handle the problems on her own. The cast is great, and the writing creative. I enjoy all of the inside jokes for those of us who have followed all of the Superman movies and TV shows. Melissa Benoist is completely lovable and believable as Supergirl. This is by far one of the better comic character conversions to TV out there along with the Flash. Supergirl is the Supergirl of the comics for all practical intents and purpose. There are some things that could be improved plotwise, but some of those are legal issue having to do with not being able to access the full DC universe because of Warner Bros, and the terrible movies they are making. Overall the acting is good and the plot is well paced. Special effects are also very good quality for a television show. Highly recommended.

This is just such a hugely fun show. My daughter and I love it. Melissa Benoist is a superb lead as the Girl of Steel, and the supporting cast are uniformly excellent. Especially noteworthy are Callista Flockeart, whose portrayal of a fabulously catty Cat Grant is a revelation, David Harewood, as a very cool .... character (no spoilers from me), and Chyler Leigh as Supergirl's human, but still kick-ass, sister. From the same stable as the other DC shows, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, this is another absolute winner, exciting, funny, engaging, and with amazing special effects, especially for a tv show.

OK, if you are a sad DC Comics freak like me you will probably like it, especially as it has not been available on TV here in the UK unless you have Sky. However, I find it so far very slow and very frustrating as there is so little in common with the original stories. I find it difficult to cope with Supergirl as being 'out' when her original function was to be 'Superman's secret weapon', and although I am totally racially neutral, I cannot cope with a black Jimmy Olsen even though the guy is wonderful in the role, and feel that the roles would better have been switched between Jeremy Jordan and the other guy. Following the previous incarnations in Supergirl and Smallville I find it hard to take to this young lady who calls herself Kara Danvers rather than Linda Lee Danvers and I find her newly acquired older sister a bit of a pain as is the spolit bitch she works for! Maybe it will pick up speed as the series develops but you get the picture, I am just a sad DC freak and too old to deal with change! Don't get me started on the new Wonder Woman.........

I really enjoyed this series. I was not expecting to like it as much as i did but after the first couple of episodes i was drawn into the stories and subplots and couldn't wait to watch more. Melissa Benoist is great as Kara and i think really captures the charactor of Supergirl well, to my surprise Callista Flockhart was really really good too, managing to be brash, arrogant and vulnerable all at the same time as Cat Grant, for me she held the series together. There were elements of Melodrama and the odd ropy episode, but overall i really enjoyed it and would suggest everyone who likes Superheros should give it a go

Une série bon enfant, mais qui se laisse voir surtout quand on apprécie les super héros de la famille DC COMICS.

Cette série retraçant les aventures de SUPERGIRL est très bien faite. Bien sur, il faut patienter quelques épisodes pour que l'intrigue se mette en place, ce qui permet de voir l'évolution de KARA/SUPERGIRL au fil des épisodes. L'interprétation des différents acteurs est convainquante et la qualité des effets spéciaux fait de cette série un succés qui, je l'espère, durera plusieurs saisons.
