Will it open a fray bentos pie tin

Yes. The larger the tin the easier it works. Brilliant on tins of bwans etc However on narrower tins (like peas or small tins of soup) you need to keep turning it for ages. After the tin has rotated 6 or 7 times the lid finally detaches.

Is this opener easy to operate by a left handed person? Or can it be used in one direction only?

My wife is left handed and her opinion is its the best and easiest can opener she has ever used.

Hard plastic, highly recommend this item. No more sharp edging on cans or lids. And easy to use too

Will it open oblong can

I have only opened one oblong can (purely to answer your question) and that seemed to open fairly well though on this occasion the lid was not completely severed. It was easy enough to open the tin (without injury) and remove the contents. Most oblong cans I come across seem to have ring pulls anyway.
