The sensor is very sensitive so it reacts immediately it senses moisture and sets the alarm off. Can have vibrate or sound alarm or both, I have it on both just to be on the safe side! Since using it my 7yr old son has not wet the bed, he is a very deep sleeper but this wakes him so he can get up to the toilet. The sensor clips onto a pair of pants then you put another pair over the top to help hold everything in place, the wire feeds up the pj top and clips into a small alarm unit that clips onto the pj top. It does look a little uncomfortable and the wire is quite long so we had to bunch it and tie as I was worries the excess wire would get wrapped round my sons arm or neck as he wriggles around. takes 3 small AAA batteries. My son has used this every night for a few months now and it should have trained him by now to wake up on his own but it's so easy to keep it on that I haven't been brave enough yet to try without it.
