Helmut Newton: SUMO, Revised by June Newton

This book is no let down. It is prodominantly B&W with occasional colour shots throughout the book. For me, this book is a must because this guy was a master of composition which you have got to see in print. Helmut Newton doesn't seem to follow rules, the rules seem to follow him. Work dating back to the early seventies. Every shot I'm thinking why do I want to keep looking at this. The first impression I got when seeing this giant heavy book and looking through it was, what a total bargain, the most expensive and largest book I've ever bought and no regrets, an inspiration. It comes with the perspex stand which is just as well for the weight and protecting the spline. Beautiful printing and but for a couple of the photographs, every print has its own page, not split by the centre fold. If you're a photographer, get this book, you are the church and here's your bible. Eats Albert Watson. Just throw in a couple of other recommendations - Simon Annand 'THe Half', and Lillian Bassman ' - B&W, big books, loads of prints, wonderful, bargains)

Amazing book - fantastic quality - very big and heavy so needxa space for it ! The photographs are spectacular - and the large format really does them justice - a must for helmut Newton fans. I also bought his Autobiography as a gift for my daughter - so interesting - I have read it twice!

Went to the Helmut Newton exhibition in Paris in 2012, I wanted to buy the book but it weighed over 20kg and cost alot of money. Glad they released a smaller version which still weighs over 7.5kg. Helmut was the master at his craft and I would say revolutionary. The book has all his famous shot shots in and more. If your a Helmut fan buy this book it's worth the money and you also get a stand for it.

A must have book for any nude photography fan. The icon that is Helmut Newton... Sumo is the one book you must have. The book is very heavy, but comes with it's own stand, perfect for the coffee table. The quality of the prints and detail is second to none, the gloss paper really brings out the depth to the images... Marvel at the talent that is Helmut Newton in all its glory. Delve into the pages and get lost away by each image telling it's own story and realizing there is so much more than meets the eye. Be inspired by his collection, the way he captures the strength of a woman and the imagination of the viewer.

I have purchased this book for friends as a wedding present, as I knew the bride would absolutely love it, and really look fabulous in their home. On this occasion I was organising a group gift for another friend, and once again, just knew she would love it as a life drawing artist. What a fabulous gift to receive. The quality of the book is superb. The artist amazing and delivery (ordered the night before) and was with me the following morning. Great service. Very impressed and super excited to give this to the lady in question.

Amazing photographer, amazing photos. Many have yet to be explored as this book is so big. Print quality is very good. Small hick-up with delivery (highly recommend first class, not free supersaver delivery). Also the acrylic stand which ships with the book is great for viewing pages on a coffee table (X shaped stand holds the book open) but cannot be used for displaying/stowing the book upright on a shelf on display.

Great print quality. The only thing I can say is that it is quite a huge book so difficult to handle (not even want to think how to handle the first edition) but, apart from this, good book if you like Helmut Newton.

Helmut Newton is a landmark, and this book published by Taschen is also a landmark of the book publishing in the 20 century, it was the most expensive and largest book published by the year 2000, in it's original limited editon form sold by auction in Berlin. This book is re-editet by Aalice Springs (June Newton) his wife and is the trade edition. This is delivered together with a plexi-glass book holder

"Sumo" is a wonderful collection of the best of Helmut Newton's unique vision. Fortunately, this edition is not as large and heavy of the original edition about which the fascinating documentary film was made (it's worth renting the film to see). If this was the original edition("Helmet Newton's SUMO") it would be too big and too heavy for the coffee table and would need a special reinforced reading stand just to comfortably view the photographs. That original edition also had a hefty retail price in the $5,000 range. That original edition is now selling for $14,000 new and $9,353 used. This edition is actually a much more practical photographic book. And it won't collapse most people's coffee table. It's also a bargain price-wise. Helmut Newton had a fascinating life and his autobiography/memoir ("Newton Helmut: Autobiography") is also an amazing read. (Feel free to read my Amazon Review of that volume). It's great because the book documents his escape from Nazi Berlin and his flight around the world to escape the Nazi Death Squads. He obviously did escape but only because he became a nomadic gigolo and that tale (no pun) provides glimpses into the famous photographer's personality. It helps the reader understand why every Jew living in Germany didn't immediately flee the country before it was too late for millions of them. The biography also tells the stories behind many of the photos in "Sumo." Now that "Sumo" is available at a reasonable price, every serious fan or collector of Newton's work needs to add it to their collection. Ditto for his "Autobiography" if a copy can be located.

Dank des Buchständers kann man das Buch aufgeschlagen lagern und sich so jeden Tag an den wunderschönen Fotos erfreuen. Das Papier und der Druck sind äußerst hochwertig. Auch das Format ist gut gewählt, denn die Bilder kommen wirklich fantastisch zur Geltung. Trotz viel nackter Haut wirkt keine der Fotografien würdelos oder gar pornografisch. Ich kann Sumo jedem wärmstens empfehlen, der sich für interessante Blickwinkel und intensive Bilderlebnisse begeistern kann und keine Scheu vor der Aktfotografie hat.
