do i need to do something to turn the watch on or should it already be ticking?

I don't remember if mine was ticking when I received it, but pull out the stem on the side of the watch and set the watch to the correct time then push the stem back into place. If the watch still doesn't work you probably need a new battery. You can return it to Amazon or just go to a jeweler and get the battery yourself.
