The central wheel is for focussing only! To focus properly you should view an object in the distance through the left eyepiece, closing the right eye and then use the focus wheel to sharpen the image. Because most peoples eyesight varies slightly between left and right eyes the binoculars have an adjustable eyepiece for the right eye so once you have focussed with the left eye close that eye and view the same object with your right eye but only adjust the focus using the adjuster on the right eyepiece - not the focussing wheel! Now view the object with both eyes open and it should be in perfect focus. Hope this helps !! **Q: Is it better to go for 10x mag instead of 8x for magnification although 8x has much better brightness** A: I would go for 8X. 10X has more magnification obviously but the image jumps around a lot. Most birdwatchers go for 7X for example. I also think weight is a factor so I tend to use my smaller and lighter binoculars more than my heavier binoculars. If you want something with serious magnification you can go for one of the Image Stabilized binoculars. Canon makes some great ones but they are heavy. I have a set of 18X which are amazing for viewing the moons of jupiter or craters on our own moon for example but they are heavy and not really practical for example if you're watching a sports event, plus they are very expensice. So i would go for 8X in a small lightweight set like the Nikon sportstar. I also have a set of Zeiss binoculars which are higher quality and made with better materials and several times more expensive but the Nikons are almost as good and a lot less painful if they fall out of your lap onto cement.
