with difficulty, especially if it's a tight fit as mine was due to the top being warped. a screwdriver won't do it and this company should provide a key or, better still change the lock altogether. I ended up using pliers or molegrips but I broke a lug in doing this. it's a pity that a good butt is spoiled by such a badly designed locking device.

Hi, this water butt measures 18 inches across its diameter, at the widest point and 30 inches high, which includes its lid. If using the recommended water butt stand, this will raise the whole water butt by approximately 12 inches.

can you fit a down pipe to it?

On the Downpipe, 2in. above the Butt push an Angle on then extend the Pipe to the middle of the Butt, then another Angle, cut a round hole in the centre of the Lid and put a small piece of Down Pipe into the Butt, job done.

Does this Ward 120L water butt have a facility on the lid for a square down pipe.

No. There is a circle marked out that can probably be cut out for round pipes and maybe a square can be cut out, but the lid is hard plastic.
